Course Overview

La Trobe's Bachelor of Nursing is a three-year pre-registration degree accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council, which is what makes graduates eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through AHPRA. La Trobe is one of the largest nursing educators in Victoria and teaches the degree across Melbourne (Bundoora), Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton — the regional campuses matter, because they come with different clinical placement networks and, in some cases, different regional migration settings.

The structure is roughly half classroom and simulation, half supervised clinical placement. You move through anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, health assessment, nursing practice across the lifespan, mental health, acute and chronic care, and evidence-based practice, with clinical placements from first year in public and private hospitals, aged care, community health and mental health services. La Trobe's clinical simulation laboratories are extensive — high-fidelity manikins, simulated wards and ICU environments — which is how the degree keeps placement hours productive rather than observational.

For Sri Lankan applicants nursing is one of the few fields where the Australian qualification changes your professional standing completely rather than incrementally. Australia has a structural nursing shortage; Registered Nurse has been on the skilled occupation lists continuously and is one of the most reliable graduate-to-permanent-residence pathways available. Be clear-eyed about the English requirement, though: the NMBA sets its own English language skills registration standard for registration, separate from the university's admission requirement, and it is high — the ordinary route is IELTS Academic 7.0 in every band. Sri Lankan applicants generally cannot use a medium-of-instruction letter to satisfy the NMBA standard, so plan the English test early and treat it as the first hurdle, not the last.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: three passes, with Biology strongly preferred; an aggregate broadly equivalent to ATAR 60-70 depending on campus and intake.
  • check_circle Cambridge or Edexcel International A-Levels: passes in three subjects, with a science subject expected; Biology and Chemistry are the strongest combination.
  • check_circle IB Diploma: 24-27 points overall with a science subject at Higher Level.
  • check_circle Applicants without a science background may enter through La Trobe College Australia's Foundation Studies or Diploma pathway, which articulates into the degree.
  • check_circle Some intakes require prerequisite study in English and a science subject at senior secondary level — check the specific campus requirement before applying.
  • check_circle Nursing places are capped by the number of available clinical placements, so apply early; La Trobe is not able to expand the cohort late in the cycle.
  • check_circle Before clinical placement you must complete a National Police Check, a Working with Children Check and the mandatory immunisation schedule including hepatitis B and tuberculosis screening — start the immunisation series in Sri Lanka, as the schedule takes months.
  • check_circle An Australian student visa requires evidence of funds covering tuition, living costs and travel, plus Overseas Student Health Cover.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle La Trobe's academic entry requirement for the Bachelor of Nursing is IELTS Academic 7.0 Overall with no band below 7.0 — higher than La Trobe's general undergraduate requirement, because it is set to align with registration.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 94 Overall with minimum section scores of 24 listening, 24 reading, 27 writing and 23 speaking.
  • check_circle PTE Academic: 65 Overall with no communicative skill below 65.
  • check_circle OET: B in each of the four components is accepted for the registration standard.
  • check_circle There is effectively no medium-of-instruction waiver here. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's English language skills registration standard governs registration, and Sri Lanka is not among the recognised countries whose applicants can satisfy it through prior education alone. Treat the test as compulsory and sit it early — this is the requirement that most often delays or derails an otherwise strong nursing application.
  • check_circle Test results have a validity window for registration purposes, so time the sitting so the score is still valid when you apply to AHPRA at the end of the degree.

Career Outcomes & PR

On completing the accredited degree you apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through AHPRA for registration as a Registered Nurse, meeting the criminal history, English language and recency-of-practice standards. Graduates are eligible for the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa, and Registered Nurse occupations have sat consistently on Australia's skilled occupation lists — nursing is one of the most dependable graduate-to-permanent-residence routes, though the specific visa settings change and should be confirmed with a registered migration agent. Most graduates enter a Graduate Nurse Program in a Victorian public health service — the Royal Melbourne, Austin Health, Alfred Health, Northern Health, Monash Health, or the regional services around Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga — before specialising in critical care, emergency, perioperative, oncology, mental health or midwifery. Graduate registered nurse salaries in Victoria start around AUD 70,000-78,000 with penalty rates on top, rising substantially with specialisation and seniority. Regional campuses are worth considering deliberately: regional study and regional employment attract additional migration points and priority processing under current settings. Sri Lankan returnees carry an Australian registration that is recognised across the Gulf, Singapore and the UK, and locally the private hospital groups — Nawaloka, Asiri, Durdans, Lanka Hospitals — actively recruit foreign-trained nurses into senior clinical and nurse-educator roles.
