Bachelor in Human Medicine
University of Zurich
Course Overview
The University of Zurich (UZH) is Switzerland's largest university and runs one of the country's top medical programmes — the Bachelor + Master in Human Medicine, a six-year integrated path leading to the Swiss federal medical exam. UZH partners with the University Hospital Zurich (USZ), one of the largest in Europe, and the Children's Hospital Zurich for clinical teaching from year 2.
IMPORTANT for Sri Lankan applicants: Swiss medicine is governed by a NUMERUS CLAUSUS — places are heavily restricted, and the vast majority are reserved for Swiss residents and EU nationals. Non-EU international students face very limited quotas (typically 1–5 places per year across all UZH medical applicants). The programme is taught entirely in German, requiring C1 proficiency by enrollment. All applicants must sit the EMS (Eignungstest für das Medizinstudium) — Swiss medical aptitude test, in German. Realistically, Sri Lankan students should consider the Italian (San Raffaele, English-taught) or German (Charité, German-taught) routes ahead of Swiss medicine. // VERIFY annual non-EU intake numbers.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/Ls alone are NOT directly accepted — Cambridge A-Levels (A* in Biology + A in Chemistry + A in Physics or Mathematics), IB 38+ with HL Biology + Chemistry 6+, or Swiss Matura equivalence required.
- check_circle EMS (Eignungstest für das Medizinstudium) — Swiss medical aptitude test, sat once per year in May/June in German.
- check_circle Restrictive non-EU quota — most years 1–5 places at UZH for the entire international cohort.
- check_circle German C1 proficiency at enrollment — non-negotiable.
English Proficiency
- check_circle Programme is German-medium. English is not a route into the programme.
- check_circle All teaching, all clinical rotations, and the federal medical exam (Eidgenössische Prüfung) are in German.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants should expect 18–24 months of intensive German preparation before applying.
- check_circle If applying without prior German, a Studienkolleg pathway in Switzerland may be required first.

Career Outcomes & PR
UZH medicine graduates qualify for the Swiss federal medical exam (Eidgenössische Prüfung) and full medical practice in Switzerland and across the EU. Switzerland's 6-month post-graduation permit and conversion to physician work-permit applies. Sri Lankan returnees who complete the Swiss programme can register with the SLMC via Act 16 examination — the Swiss MD is recognised. However, the realistic pathway is to complete a Swiss specialty residency (Facharzt, 5–6 years) and stay in Swiss practice rather than returning. NOTE: Most Sri Lankan medicine applicants will find the Italian (English-taught) or German routes more accessible than the Swiss numerus clausus.
