Course Overview

The Australian Maritime College (AMC) — part of the University of Tasmania — is Australia's national centre for maritime education and research. The Bachelor of Engineering (Maritime Engineering) is Engineers Australia accredited (Washington Accord recognised globally) with three specialisations: Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, and Marine and Offshore Engineering. AMC operates one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest model test basins, an offshore wave tank, and a full-mission ship simulator — facilities that no other Australian university can match. The Newnham (Launceston, Tasmania) campus has direct fleet access to the Tamar River for at-sea trials.

Sri Lankan applicants — particularly those from naval / merchant marine families or from the Colombo South Harbour ecosystem — choose AMC because Sri Lanka's maritime economy (Hambantota Port, Colombo Port, Trincomalee deep-water port, growing offshore wind interest) urgently needs naval architects and marine engineers. Tasmania is also a designated regional study area for the 485 visa (3 years instead of 2 for a Bachelor) and has favoured State Nomination (190/491) thresholds. Engineers Australia accreditation is reciprocal with the Sri Lanka Engineering Council for IESL Chartered Engineer pathway.
