Bachelor of Science (Civil Systems major)
University of Melbourne
Course Overview
The University of Melbourne uses the Melbourne Model — a 3-year Bachelor of Science Civil Systems major followed by a 2-year Master of Engineering (ME). This 3+2 structure delivers full Engineers Australia accreditation (Washington Accord recognised globally) and is the Melbourne pathway equivalent to a 5-year UK MEng. The Civil Systems major covers structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, transportation systems, surveying, environmental engineering, and project management. Students undertake industry projects with Lendlease, Arup, AECOM, John Holland and Bouygues throughout the degree.
Sri Lankan applicants — particularly Mathematics / Physics A-Level students aiming for the broader Melbourne Model flexibility (you can switch majors more easily than locked-in 4-year engineering programmes) — choose Melbourne for the Engineers Australia accreditation, the 485 visa eligibility, and the direct PR pathway. Civil Engineering Professional (233211), Structural Engineer (233214), Geotechnical Engineer (233212) are all on Australia's MLTSSL. The 3+2 structure also positions students well for international employment via Washington Accord recognition.
