Bachelor of Marine Science
James Cook University
Course Overview
James Cook University's Bachelor of Marine Science is consistently ranked #2 globally for Marine and Freshwater Biology (CWUR / Shanghai Ranking) — second only to Florida. JCU sits on the Great Barrier Reef coastline at its Townsville and Cairns campuses, giving Sri Lankan students access to the world's largest reef system as a fieldwork laboratory from semester one.
The three-year degree lets students major in Marine Biology, Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, or Tropical Marine Conservation. Field schools are embedded — Orpheus Island Research Station, Lizard Island, Heron Island, plus partnerships with AIMS (Australian Institute of Marine Science) and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The Cairns campus is the global hub for tropical marine research.
For Sri Lankan applicants from coastal communities, NARA (National Aquatic Resources Agency), or with interest in reef conservation, this is the strongest matched degree in the OECD. Marine biology is on Australia's Skilled Occupation List under the broader Environmental Scientist code, making PR plausible after the 485 post-study work visa.
