BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences
University of Freiburg
Course Overview
The BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences at University College Freiburg — part of the University of Freiburg, one of Germany's oldest (founded 1457) and a member of the elite Excellence-funded research universities — is a fully English-taught, interdisciplinary undergraduate degree. Students combine humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences before specialising in a major (Culture & History, Governance, Earth & Environmental Sciences, or Life Sciences), and study a foreign language throughout. Small seminars, a study-abroad semester, and a research-led final year make it closer to a US-style liberal arts college than a traditional German lecture programme.
For Sri Lankan applicants, the standout is cost: as a public university in Baden-Württemberg, tuition for non-EU students is capped at €1,500 per semester (about €3,000 per year) — a fraction of UK, US, or Australian fees — for a degree taught entirely in English at a world-top-200 university. Germany also grants graduates an 18-month job-seeker residence permit, and its strong economy and shortage of skilled graduates make staying on to work a realistic goal.
Entry Requirements

- check_circle Selection interview (often online) for shortlisted applicants.

Career Outcomes & PR
Germany grants graduates an 18-month job-seeker residence permit, and the EU Blue Card offers a fast PR pathway for skilled graduates. Freiburg Liberal Arts graduates enter international organisations, consulting, sustainability and policy roles, research, and Master's programmes across Germany and Europe. Germany's low tuition plus strong graduate labour market makes it one of the highest value-for-money study destinations for Sri Lankan students. Entry-level graduate salaries commonly run €40,000–€48,000.
