BA (Hons) International Relations
University of Malta
Course Overview
University of Malta's BA (Hons) International Relations is delivered through the Department of International Relations within the Faculty of Arts. Malta is an EU member state, a former British colony, a Commonwealth member, and a Mediterranean state with diplomatic ties across North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe — context that gives the department genuine substance in its teaching. The 3-year programme covers diplomatic history, international political theory, Mediterranean politics, international law, EU institutions, security studies, foreign policy analysis, and a final-year dissertation.
Sri Lankan A-Level applicants from Arts or Commerce streams interested in diplomacy, multilateral institutions, or international NGOs choose Malta for the English-medium teaching, low fee tier (€9,000/yr Bachelor's), and direct exposure to EU institutional politics. The University of Malta hosts the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies, where students attend visiting-diplomat seminars. Returnees route into the Sri Lanka Foreign Service (via the Foreign Service Examination), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, multilateral roles at the UN system (UNDP, UNICEF, IOM Sri Lanka offices), policy think tanks (LKI, Centre for Policy Alternatives, Verité Research), and international NGOs.
