Most Sri Lankan students miss scholarships not because they were unqualified, but because they found out in March about a deadline that closed in October. Funding runs on a calendar that starts roughly a year before you fly. Here is that calendar.

info

Deadlines shift by a few weeks each cycle, and some are set locally by an embassy or a nominating agency rather than published globally. Every date below was checked against the official source at the time of writing — always confirm on the awarding body’s own site before you plan around it.

Two rules that decide almost everything

Before any specific date, understand the two structural rules. Nearly every missed scholarship in Sri Lanka comes from breaking one of them.

Rule one: the scholarship deadline usually falls 9 to 15 months before your course starts. If you are aiming to fly in September 2027, your funding decisions are happening right now, in late 2026. Students who start looking in the same calendar year as their intake have already lost most of the fully funded options.

Rule two: for most awards, the university application comes first — and it is a hard prerequisite, not a suggestion. The Swedish Institute is the clearest example: you cannot apply for the scholarship at all unless you already applied to your Master’s programme through University Admissions Sweden in mid-January. The scholarship window in February is useless to you if you missed January. The same sequencing applies at Oxford, Cambridge, most Dutch universities, and across Finland.

Pro Counsellor Tip

"

Work backwards, not forwards. Take your target intake month, subtract twelve months, and that is when your work starts. For a September 2027 intake in the UK or Europe, your English test should already be sat and your two referees should already have agreed by around October 2026.

"

Closing now: September and October 2026

This is the busiest window in the whole year, and it is open as you read this.

  • check_circle Chevening (UK, Master's) — OPEN NOW. The 2027/28 round opened 4 August 2026 and closes 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. You need two years of work experience and three UK course choices. Sri Lanka is a fully eligible Chevening country and Sri Lankan scholars are selected every year.
  • check_circle Commonwealth Master's Scholarship (UK) — the CSC system opens 8 September 2026 and closes 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST. Critical detail: you apply through a Sri Lankan nominating agency, not direct to the CSC, and that agency's internal deadline is earlier than the CSC's.
  • check_circle Commonwealth PhD and Split-site Scholarships (UK) — the same 20 October 2026 CSC deadline, with nominators forwarding candidates in December 2026.
  • check_circle Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships — the 2027/28 cycle opened 20 August 2026. Your deadline is set by the Swiss Embassy for Sri Lanka, not by Bern, and typically falls in November or December.
  • check_circle Global Korea Scholarship, undergraduate track — the GKS-U embassy round normally closes at the end of September. Documents go physically to the Korean Embassy in Colombo.

If you only act on one line in this article, make it Chevening. It is the single largest fully funded route from Sri Lanka to a UK Master’s, and the window closes in early October.

November 2026 to January 2027

This is when the university-linked funding clusters, and where Rule Two bites hardest.

  • check_circle Cambridge and Gates Cambridge — the international funding deadline falls in early December, tied to your Cambridge course application. Gates Cambridge explicitly includes Sri Lankan citizens in its international round.
  • check_circle Oxford (Clarendon, Weidenfeld-Hoffmann) — both run off Oxford's January gathered-field deadline. There is no separate Clarendon form; you are considered automatically if your course application lands in time.
  • check_circle Singapore — SINGA closes around 1 December for the following August intake. NTU and SMU graduate rounds cluster in late December and January.
  • check_circle Sweden — University Admissions Sweden closes around 15 January. Lund, KTH, Karolinska and Stockholm scholarship forms all sit behind that date.
  • check_circle Finland — Studyinfo.fi Master's applications close in early January, around 8 January for Aalto and Helsinki. Finnish tuition scholarships are decided from that same application.
  • check_circle Netherlands — Radboud, Groningen and the Holland Scholarship cluster around 1 February, with several faculty deadlines in December and January.

February to May 2027

  • check_circle Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals — a roughly two-week window in February. You must already have applied to your Master's through University Admissions Sweden in January. Requires substantial work experience.
  • check_circle Global Korea Scholarship, graduate track — the GKS-G embassy round has run in mid-February in recent cycles. Sri Lanka receives a small annual quota, so the field is smaller than you would expect for an award of this size.
  • check_circle Australia Awards Sri Lanka — the annual round has run 1 February to 30 April through the OASIS portal. This is a development-focused award: it requires work experience and a commitment to return to Sri Lanka, and it prioritises applicants from conflict-affected and underserved districts.
  • check_circle Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters — most consortia close between January and March, each with its own deadline. You apply to the consortium, not to a single university.
  • check_circle Fulbright Sri Lanka, Master's award — closes 31 May every year, administered by the US–Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission in Colombo. Note the long lead: a 31 May 2027 deadline is for a programme starting in 2028.

June to August 2027

  • check_circle DAAD EPOS and Helmut-Schmidt (Germany) — development-related Master's awards with course-specific deadlines, commonly falling between June and October.
  • check_circle KOICA — Sri Lankan nominations are circulated through the Department of External Resources, typically around the middle of the calendar year. This one is easy to miss because it is announced locally rather than internationally.
  • check_circle The next Chevening cycle opens in early August, and the wheel starts again.

Three famous scholarships Sri Lankans keep applying for and cannot win

This is the part nobody publishes, and it is the reason students lose entire months.

The Rhodes Scholarship. There is currently no route for a Sri Lankan citizen. Rhodes allocates awards through fixed geographic constituencies — India, Pakistan, Australia, Kenya, Singapore and around twenty others — and Sri Lanka has never had one. Sri Lankans could previously apply through the Global constituency, and the Rhodes Trust suspended Global awards in 2026. The India constituency does not help: its own candidate documentation requires Indian citizenship with an Indian passport, and at least four of the last ten years of study at an institution physically located in India.

The Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme. Widely listed by aggregator sites as open to Sri Lankans. It is not. AKF runs the programme through country offices in fifteen countries — Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, the Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, New Zealand, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania and Uganda. Sri Lanka is not among them, and there is no office that accepts Sri Lankan nationals.

GREAT Scholarships. Eligibility is set per country and the list changes every cycle. Do not assume Sri Lanka is included this year because a blog said so last year — check the British Council’s current country list before starting.

The honest version of scholarship advice is that a Sri Lankan passport opens a great many doors and firmly closes a few. Knowing which are closed is worth as much as knowing which are open.

The bottom line

The fully funded routes that genuinely take Sri Lankan students are Chevening, the Commonwealth family, Fulbright, GKS, Australia Awards, the Swedish Institute, Erasmus Mundus, Gates Cambridge and the Oxford funds. Between them they cover Master’s and PhD study across the UK, USA, Australia, Korea, Sweden and the EU. Almost all of them decide between September and February for an intake more than a year away. If you are reading this in the last quarter of 2026 and targeting late 2027, you are on time — but only just.

Next steps

Tell us your degree and class, your work experience, your English test status and your target intake, and we will map you against the deadlines above rather than the ones that sound impressive. If you are still choosing a course, our scholarships index lets you filter live awards by country and level, and the UK scholarship page covers the Chevening and Commonwealth routes in more depth. If your English test is the thing holding you back, several of these routes accept a medium-of-instruction letter instead — see studying abroad without IELTS.
