The most useful thing to understand about doing a PhD in Austria is that it is usually a job, not a course. You do not apply to a programme and then hunt for funding — you apply to an advertised, salaried doctoral position attached to a professor’s research project. Get that distinction right and the whole process, including the money, looks completely different.

info

Fees, salary rates and residence-permit thresholds change — the tuition fee is set per semester, FWF salary rates are revised each January, and the means-of-subsistence figures are tied to Austrian social-insurance rates that also change annually. Every figure below was verified in September 2026 against the official sources listed at the end. Confirm current amounts with the university and the OeAD before you commit money.

The Austrian PhD is an employment contract

In Sri Lanka, and in much of the UK/Australia system, you apply to a doctoral programme. In Austria the dominant model is different: a funded research project advertises a doctoral position, you apply to it like a job, and if you are hired you get an employment contract with a salary, social insurance and annual leave.

What that changes for you:

  • check_circle You apply to a position, not an intake. There is no single September deadline — positions are advertised year-round as projects get funded.
  • check_circle Your application is closer to a job application than a university application: CV, motivation letter, and a research fit with that specific project and supervisor.
  • check_circle A supervisor's interest is the gate. Being formally admissible to the doctoral school matters, but it is not what gets you in.
  • check_circle If you are hired, you are employed in Austria — which changes both your income and how you satisfy the residence-permit funds requirement.

There are self-funded and scholarship-funded doctoral students in Austria too, and some doctoral schools admit students without an attached salary. But if you are coming from Sri Lanka without family money behind you, the funded-position route is the one that makes the numbers work.

What a funded position actually pays

The main national research funder is the FWF (Austrian Science Fund). Its published rates set what most doctoral positions pay, because projects are budgeted against them.

For 2026, a doctoral candidate is budgeted at €50,220 per year for up to 30 hours per week — the standard PhD employment fraction.

info

Read that figure carefully. The FWF rate is the cost to the project including the employer’s contributions, not the money that lands in your account. Austrian employer social contributions are substantial, and salaries are paid in 14 instalments a year rather than 12. Your actual gross is meaningfully lower than €50,220 ÷ 12, and your net lower again. Ask for the gross monthly salary and the employment fraction in writing before you accept — those two numbers, not the project budget, are what you will live on.

Even after that discount, a funded Austrian doctoral position is a genuine salary in a high-income country, with social insurance included. That is a materially different proposition from a UK PhD where a stipend is the norm and tuition is charged on top.

Tuition: €726.72 a semester, and Sri Lanka does not get the waiver

Austrian public universities charge non-EU students €726.72 per semester in tuition, plus the €26.20 Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) fee — €752.92 a semester, about €1,505.84 a year (roughly LKR 520,000 at 345 to the euro).

Crucially, the fee does not change by degree level. A doctoral student pays the same as a bachelor’s student. There is no separate, higher “international PhD fee” as there would be in the UK, Australia or the USA.

info

A myth worth killing: you will read that Austria waives tuition for students from developing countries. That waiver is real, but it applies only to citizens of the 43 least developed countries listed under the Tuition Fee Ordinance — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Yemen, Zambia and similar. Sri Lanka is not on that list and does not qualify. Budget the full €726.72 a semester. If an agent tells you Austria is free for Sri Lankans, they are reading the wrong list.

The residence permit — and the trap for anyone over 24

This is where Sri Lankan PhD applicants get caught out, because the funds requirement is age-banded and most doctoral applicants fall on the expensive side of the line.

To get a student residence permit you must prove means of subsistence for twelve months in advance:

  • check_circle Under 24 years old: €722.58 per month
  • check_circle 24 and over: €1,308.39 per month
  • check_circle Over twelve months that is about €8,671 if you are under 24 — but about €15,701 (roughly LKR 5.4 million) if you are 24 or older
  • check_circle If your rent exceeds €386.43 a month, you must prove the excess on top of these amounts

Most people starting a PhD have already finished a master’s, so they are 24 or over. The requirement almost doubles at that birthday, and a student who budgeted against the under-24 figure they saw on a blog will be short by around €7,000 at exactly the wrong moment.

Pro Counsellor Tip

"

If you hold a funded doctoral position, your employment contract and salary are themselves evidence of means — you are not usually expected to park LKR 5.4 million in a bank account as well. This is the single strongest practical argument for chasing a funded position rather than a self-funded admission. Get the contract first, then start the permit application.

"

How to actually find a position

  • check_circle FWF's job board — funded projects advertise their doctoral vacancies there as grants are awarded, which is why the listings are continuous rather than seasonal.
  • check_circle University doctoral school pages — Vienna, TU Wien, BOKU, Graz, Innsbruck and the Institute of Science and Technology Austria all list open positions.
  • check_circle EURAXESS — the EU-wide research jobs portal, filterable to Austria and to doctoral level.
  • check_circle Direct email to a supervisor whose published work genuinely overlaps yours — normal practice in Austria, and often how a position gets filled before it is widely circulated.

Write to the research, not to the country. A message that names a specific paper, explains what you would extend and attaches a focused CV gets read. A generic “I wish to pursue PhD in your esteemed university” does not.

English, German and the honest answer

Doctoral research in the sciences and engineering is very commonly conducted in English, and many positions state English as the working language. You can complete a PhD in Austria without German.

Living there is another matter. Administrative offices, tenancy agreements and the residence-permit process itself often operate in German, and so does most of the social life outside the lab. Nobody needs German to be admitted; almost everybody benefits from having some by year two.

Is it worth it compared with the UK or Australia?

For a funded position, the Austrian proposition is unusually strong: a salaried employment contract, social insurance, tuition of about LKR 520,000 a year rather than several million, and a route into the EU research system. Against that, positions are competitive, supervisor-dependent, and advertised unpredictably rather than on a clean annual cycle.

The comparison that matters is not Austria versus the UK in the abstract. It is a funded Austrian position versus an unfunded UK offer — and on that comparison the Austrian option usually wins on economics by a wide margin.

The bottom line

Treat the Austrian PhD as a job search, not an admissions cycle. Chase funded positions, ask for the gross monthly salary and employment fraction in writing before accepting, budget €726.72 a semester because the developing-country waiver does not cover Sri Lanka, and if you are 24 or over, plan against €1,308.39 a month for twelve months rather than the lower figure you will see quoted elsewhere.
