Student Residence Visa · Verified 2026-05-14

Your university handles the visa. Your only real test is the medical fitness exam.

Dubai branch campuses sponsor your residence visa directly through GDRFA — no embassy appointment, no interview, no funds proof. Once you arrive, the medical fitness test (HIV, TB, hepatitis B) is the one screening that can derail the whole process.

The one thing that decides it

The medical fitness test on arrival

Dubai's GDRFA grants your entry permit pre-arrival. Then within 60 days of arrival you must pass a mandatory medical fitness test — blood test plus chest X-ray, screening for HIV, active TB, syphilis and hepatitis B. A positive result for HIV or active TB results in entry refusal under UAE law.

  • check_circle Take a pre-arrival medical screening in Sri Lanka first — if there's an issue, you find out before you've flown.
  • check_circle Hepatitis B vaccination history matters — be ready to show your records.
  • check_circle TB treatment must be complete and documented before applying.
  • check_circle The test is non-negotiable; even Sri Lankan diplomatic relations don't waive it.

Who can apply for the Student Residence Visa

Eligibility is the easy part — most denied applications fail on documentation or interview prep, not eligibility. Make sure all of these are cleared before you book anything.

Mandatory health screening on arrival in Dubai — covers HIV, TB and a few infectious diseases. Required for the Emirates ID and visa stamp.

Emirates ID + Health Insurance

Issued together with your residency visa. Health insurance is mandatory and usually bundled by the sponsoring university.

The 6-step application, in order

Doing these in the wrong order is the second-most-common reason files slip a semester. Numbers matter.

  1. 1

    Accept offer

Confirm acceptance and pay the deposit. The university begins your entry permit application.

  2. 2

    Entry permit issued

GDRFA issues a 60-day entry permit. The university couriers it to you (or sends via email for e-visa countries).

  3. 3

    Travel to Dubai

Enter the UAE within the entry-permit validity (usually 60 days).

  4. 4

    Medical fitness test

Mandatory blood test and chest X-ray on arrival at an approved medical centre. Tests for HIV, TB, syphilis, hepatitis.

  5. 5

    Emirates ID & visa stamp

Biometrics for Emirates ID; residence visa stamped in your passport. The university coordinates appointments.

  6. 6

    Annual renewal

Student visa is valid for 1 year, renewable annually for the duration of your studies.

Visa fees & costs

These are visa-specific costs only. Tuition and living costs are covered in our full cost guide for Dubai .

Visa Fee Summary

Medical fitness test AED 350 (~LKR 30,000)

Health insurance (annual) AED 1,500–3,500 (often bundled by uni)

Why Dubai student visas get refused

Most refusals come down to these four problems. Knowing them before you submit is the single biggest difference between approval and refusal.

warning

Failed medical test

Positive HIV, active TB, or hepatitis B results lead to entry refusal in the UAE. This is non-negotiable.

warning

Late entry on permit

Entry permit expires after 60 days. If you arrive after this window, the university must re-apply.

warning

Document discrepancies

Name mismatch between passport and offer letter, or unattested education documents from Sri Lanka.

warning

Outstanding violations

Any prior UAE residence visa overstay or fine appears on the system.

How we keep Dubai applications watertight

Four things we do for every Sri Lankan Dubai file before it goes near the embassy or immigration portal.

school

University sponsorship liaison

We coordinate directly with Heriot-Watt Dubai, Curtin Dubai, Murdoch Dubai etc. to confirm your entry permit timing and document requirements.

health_and_safety

Pre-arrival medical screening

Before you fly, we recommend a Sri Lanka-side medical test to confirm you'll pass the UAE on-arrival exam. Saves the cost of a one-way flight if there's an issue.

fact_check

Document attestation

Your A/L and high-school certificates must be attested by the UAE Embassy in Colombo + the UAE MFA. We handle the queue end-to-end.

Emirates ID & residence stamp coordination

After arrival: medical test booking, Emirates ID biometrics appointment and residence visa stamp pickup — coordinated with your university's student services.
