Western degree, 30% less · Verified 2026-05-14
Heriot-Watt, Curtin, Wollongong, Murdoch — branch campuses award the identical degree at a third less.
Plus a 4-hour flight home to see family, tax-free salaries on graduation, and a fast-growing job market that actively recruits Sri Lankan graduates. Dubai compresses the long-term economics significantly — and shorter flights mean cheaper visits home.

Where your money actually goes
Forget the headline number for a moment. Studying in Dubai has four cost buckets — and three of them are negotiable.
University
Tuition
Negotiable via scholarship choice, university choice and level of study. The biggest single number on the page.
Your control
Living costs
Rent, food, transport. Choosing a smaller city can save the equivalent of a year's tuition over a 3-year degree.
Fixed
One-time pre-departure
Visa, tests, flights, initial deposits. Same for everyone — plan with buffer; don't be surprised.
Government / required
Health & admin
Health insurance, residency cards, mandatory deposits. Not negotiable — but the cheapest provider can save a lot.
What you pay the university
Ranges below cover every Dubai institution Lanka Scholar partners with. The lower end is regional / public universities; the upper end is elite institutions. Your tuition is set by where you apply — and how aggressively you target scholarships.
| Study Level | LKR (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's — branch campuses (per year) | LKR 3M – 6.4M |
| Master's — branch campuses (per year) | LKR 4.3M – 8M |
| MBA (Heriot-Watt, Murdoch, Manchester) | LKR 6.8M – 12M |
| Medicine / Pharmacy | LKR 7.7M – 12M |
Your single biggest variable
City choice is the lever Sri Lankan families most often underuse. Over a 3-year degree, choosing a smaller city instead of the capital can save the equivalent of a full year's tuition — for the same Dubai qualification.

Four ways to bring the number down
The headline figure is the starting line, not the finish line. Every Sri Lankan student who lands in Dubai has pulled at least two of these levers.
Shared accommodation in Knowledge Village
Sharing a 2-bed apartment in Knowledge Village (next to most branch campuses) cuts your rent from AED 5,000 to AED 1,800/month — saving roughly AED 38,000/year.
savings Saves up to LKR 3.2M / yearLive in Sharjah, commute
A 2-bed flat in Sharjah costs ~AED 2,200/month. The 30-minute metro / bus commute is straightforward, and you save AED 30k+/year.
savings Saves up to LKR 2.6M / yearWork part-time legally
Student visa holders can get a part-time work permit for up to 15 hours/week. Tax-free salaries at AED 30–60/hour in retail / hospitality offset much of living costs.
savings Up to LKR 2M / year earnedApply for the Golden Visa during studies
High-performance students at accredited Dubai universities can apply for the 10-year Golden Visa during their degree — bypassing the post-study job search entirely.

How we keep these numbers honest
Four things you should know before you trust this page.
Exchange rate stated
All LKR figures use the rate noted in the hero. Live rates fluctuate; we update this page quarterly. Last verified: 2026-05-14.
Universities pay us — never you
Lanka Scholar earns a commission from universities when you enrol. You pay tuition and fees directly to the institutions. There is no service fee, registration fee, or agent fee from us.
Ranges, not promises
Tuition and living costs vary by university and city. We've given the realistic middle 80% — not the cheapest possible or most expensive.

How scholarships change this math
Branch campuses offer 10–30% Sri Lankan-student-specific scholarships through Lanka Scholar's direct partnerships with Heriot-Watt Dubai, Curtin Dubai and Murdoch Dubai. The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Scholarship and university-level merit awards bring further reductions for high-academic Sri Lankan applicants.

-
Is the degree the same as the UK / Australian home campus? expand_more
Yes. Heriot-Watt Dubai awards a Heriot-Watt University degree — same certificate, same accreditation, same alumni network as Edinburgh. Same applies to Curtin, Wollongong, Murdoch and Birmingham branch campuses. -
Can I work after graduation in the UAE? expand_more
Yes. Graduates can apply for a 1-year job-seeking visa, then transition to a work visa once employed. Top-performing graduates can apply for the 10-year Golden Visa. -
What happens if my parents are also working in the UAE? expand_more
Family in UAE is a positive factor for visa renewal — and lets you save on accommodation by living with them. Many Sri Lankan families with one parent working in Dubai send children to study locally for exactly this reason. -
Is Dubai a real long-term study destination, or just an intermediate step? expand_more
Both. Some students use Dubai as a launch pad — branch campuses offer transfer paths to home campuses for the final year. Others build careers in the UAE's growing finance, tech and hospitality sectors. -
How does the cost compare to studying the same degree in the UK? expand_more
Heriot-Watt Edinburgh's BBA: ~£21,000/year (~LKR 8M). Heriot-Watt Dubai's BBA: ~AED 60,000/year (~LKR 5.1M). Plus living costs in Dubai are 30–40% lower than UK cities, and flights home are a quarter of the UK fare.
