Professional Master of Education (Primary Teaching)
Dublin City University
Deadline detail: Applications open in November and close around February through the PAC system — school placement allocation drives the early deadline
Course Overview
The Professional Master of Education (Primary Teaching) at DCU is the standard route by which a graduate — someone who already holds a degree in another subject — becomes a qualified primary teacher in Ireland. It is delivered by the DCU Institute of Education on the St Patrick's Campus in Drumcondra, the largest faculty of education in Ireland and the successor to St Patrick's College, which trained Irish primary teachers for over 140 years. The two years combine pedagogy across the full primary curriculum, inclusive and special education, child development, and three extended school placements in Irish primary schools, assessed on the ground by DCU tutors. Graduates qualify to apply for registration with the Teaching Council of Ireland under Route 1 (Primary).
We have to be direct with Sri Lankan applicants about a hard barrier here, because it is the single most common disappointment we see in Irish teacher-education enquiries. Registration as a primary teacher in Ireland requires competence in the Irish language (Gaeilge), and entry to the PME (Primary) requires Leaving Certificate Irish at Higher Level grade H4 or a Teaching Council-recognised equivalent. This is not a language test you can substitute IELTS for, and it is not waived for international applicants. A Sri Lankan graduate who has never studied Irish is, in practice, not eligible for direct entry. There are recognised Irish-language qualification routes and bridging courses, but they realistically add years to the plan, and we would be doing you no favours by implying otherwise.
The honest alternative, and the one we recommend to almost every Sri Lankan graduate who comes to us wanting to teach in Ireland, is the PME (Post-Primary) — also at DCU. It carries no Irish-language requirement, it registers you with the Teaching Council by subject, and Ireland has genuine, documented shortages in post-primary maths, physics, chemistry, computer science, home economics, Spanish and modern foreign languages. A Sri Lankan graduate with a strong science, mathematics or IT degree is a genuinely competitive applicant there. If primary teaching specifically is the goal, New Zealand, Australia and the UK impose no comparable language barrier and are the better destinations — talk to us before committing money to an Irish primary route.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle An honours bachelor's degree (minimum second class honours, GPA 3.0+ from a Sri Lankan university) with content matching at least three primary curriculum subject areas.
- check_circle Leaving Certificate Irish (Gaeilge) at Higher Level grade H4 or a Teaching Council-recognised equivalent — a mandatory Teaching Council requirement for primary registration that is NOT waived for international applicants and is the key eligibility barrier for Sri Lankan graduates.
- check_circle Leaving Certificate English at O4/H7 or a recognised equivalent, and Mathematics at O4/H7 or equivalent.
- check_circle Garda vetting (Irish police clearance) plus a Sri Lanka Police clearance certificate before school placement.
- check_circle Applications are made through the Postgraduate Applications Centre (PAC), with certified transcripts and a syllabus mapping showing curriculum-subject coverage.
- check_circle Applicants without Leaving Certificate Irish should discuss the DCU PME (Post-Primary) instead — it has no Irish-language requirement and registers by subject, with Irish shortages in maths, physics, chemistry, computer science and modern languages.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each component).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced, PTE Academic 63, or Duolingo English Test 120 also accepted.
- check_circle Waived if your bachelor's degree was taught and examined entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium university programmes qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter from the awarding university.
- check_circle Note that the English requirement is separate from and additional to the Irish-language (Gaeilge) requirement, which cannot be satisfied by any English qualification.

Career Outcomes & PR
PME (Primary) graduates who complete Teaching Council registration enter Irish primary schools, where the Department of Education has run sustained recruitment campaigns to address teacher supply — starting salaries on the primary teachers' scale begin around €41,000 with incremental progression and a public-service pension. Master's-level graduates qualify for Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme, giving two years on a Stamp 1G permission to seek employment, after which an employment permit or Stamp 4 route applies. The blunt reality for Sri Lankan applicants is that the Gaeilge requirement, not the visa, is the gate. Graduates who cannot meet it should look at the PME (Post-Primary) for Ireland, or at primary teaching qualifications in New Zealand, Australia or the UK where no comparable language requirement exists — and where a DCU-standard education qualification also opens international-school leadership roles in Colombo at Gateway, Elizabeth Moir, Colombo International School and the British School in Colombo.
