Course Overview
McGill's Department of Sociology admits a small doctoral cohort each year and funds it — the standard offer is a multi-year package combining a departmental stipend, teaching and research assistantships and fee support, typically in the region of CAD 25,000 a year for four to five years. That funding structure, not the ranking, is what makes a North American sociology doctorate viable for a Sri Lankan applicant; unfunded PhD offers in this discipline should be treated as a warning sign anywhere.
Research strengths include migration and ethnic relations, demography and population health, economic sociology and labour markets, gender and family, and quantitative methods — the department is closely tied to the Centre on Population Dynamics, which gives strong training in large-scale survey and administrative data analysis. Montréal is also the cheapest of Canada's big three cities by a wide margin, and McGill teaches and supervises in English despite sitting in a francophone province.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Master's degree in sociology or a closely related social science with a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 or better (roughly a Sri Lankan First Class or high Second Upper), including a research thesis.

- check_circle GRE is not required. Strong quantitative or qualitative methods training is expected and should be evidenced explicitly.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 86 Overall (no section below 20).
- check_circle Waived if you hold a degree from a university where English is the language of instruction — Sri Lankan applicants normally satisfy this with a Medium of Instruction letter.

Career Outcomes & PR
The primary destination is academia — McGill sociology doctorates take faculty and post-doctoral posts across Canada, the US, the UK and Australia. A growing share move into applied research: Statistics Canada and provincial data agencies, policy research institutes, health-services research, and senior analyst roles in government and international organisations where survey design and causal inference are the core skill. Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit gives up to three years of open work rights and doctoral graduates score well under Express Entry for permanent residence. Sri Lankan returnees fit faculty posts at Colombo, Peradeniya, Jaffna, Kelaniya and OUSL, and research leadership at the Centre for Poverty Analysis, LIRNEasia, IPS, and the UN and World Bank country offices.
