PhD in Health Sciences
University of Malta
Course Overview
University of Malta's PhD in Health Sciences is delivered through the Faculty of Health Sciences (and in joint supervision with the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery for clinically-anchored projects). The 3-4 year doctorate is supervisor-led and built around an original research thesis (typically 80,000-100,000 words). Research clusters span clinical epidemiology, pharmacology, physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences, midwifery, occupational therapy, communication therapy, biomedical sciences, and applied public health. Malta's small but EU-integrated health system, with Mater Dei Hospital as a major teaching site, gives clinical-research projects strong primary-data access.
Sri Lankan applicants with Master's degrees in clinical sciences, public health, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, nursing, or physiotherapy (Colombo Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Ruhuna, plus UK / EU Master's holders) treat this PhD as a route into European clinical research at one of the lowest tuition tiers among accredited EU doctorates (€5,000/yr). Some positions co-funded by EU Horizon Europe consortia. Returnees route into Senior Lecturer / Consultant / Researcher tracks at Colombo Faculty of Medicine, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Ruhuna, Sri Jayewardenepura, plus the Sri Lanka Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) and the National Institutes of Health Research.
