EPFL
Course Overview
EPFL's Doctoral Programme in Electrical Engineering (EDEE) covers the full breadth of modern EE — power systems and energy networks, photonics and integrated optics, RF and microwave engineering, signal processing, integrated circuits, biomedical engineering, control systems, and quantum engineering. EDEE is consistently QS top-20 globally and partners deeply with CERN (high-energy physics electronics), ESA (space systems), the Swiss Plasma Center (fusion research), Logitech, ABB, Hitachi Energy, and Sonova.
Switzerland uses the salaried-PhD model: EPFL doctoral students are employed on contracts paying CHF 50,000–65,000 gross/year (rising to ~CHF 70,000+ in later years), with full social security, pension contributions, and 25 vacation days. Tuition is fully waived. The standard cycle is 4 years (occasionally 5). Sri Lankan applicants typically enter with strong MSc credentials in EE, Physics, or related discipline from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, an IIT, or a European/American university. Pre-aligned supervisor contact through EPFL's faculty pages is the standard route in.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Communication Systems, or closely-related field with strong grades (Swiss 5.0/6.0+ or first-class equivalent).
- check_circle Pre-aligned supervisor contact — EPFL PhDs are project-based; identify an EDEE faculty member and align research interest.
- check_circle Research statement (3-5 pages), CV, Master's thesis, and 2-3 academic references.
- check_circle Publication record (IEEE conferences, Optica/OSA, Photonics West) is valued for advanced positions.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or higher.
- check_circle Waived if your prior degree was taught entirely in English at a recognised institution. French is helpful for daily life but not academically required.

Career Outcomes & PR
EPFL EE PhDs route into senior research roles at IBM Research Zurich, Intel Labs Switzerland, STMicroelectronics, ABB Corporate Research, Hitachi Energy R&D, Logitech, Sonova, plus growing roles at EPFL spin-offs (Anybotics, MindMaze, Pix4D, Climeworks). Academic placements at EPFL, ETH, Imperial College, EPF Lausanne, Stanford, MIT are common. Switzerland's 6-month post-PhD permit and STEM-exempt work-permit conversion under non-EU quotas applies. Starting salaries: CHF 130k–170k at top Swiss employers. Sri Lankan returnees with EPFL EE PhDs are well-placed for senior R&D at Dialog Axiata, MillenniumIT, ICTA, and lectureships at UoM EE/CSE departments.
