ETH Zurich
Course Overview
ETH Zurich's PhD in Computer Science is consistently ranked among the top 5 doctoral CS programmes in the world — alongside MIT, Stanford, CMU, and Berkeley. The Department of Computer Science (D-INFK) covers AI, machine learning, computer vision, NLP, programming languages, systems, security, theoretical CS, computer graphics, and biomedical informatics. ETH's deep partnerships with Google Zurich, Microsoft Research, IBM Research Zurich, Disney Research, and the European labs of Apple, Meta, and DeepMind make industry-aligned PhD work straightforward.
Switzerland uses the salaried-PhD model: doctoral candidates are employed by ETH on contracts paying CHF 70,000–90,000 gross/year (CHF 4,800–6,200/month net) with full social security, pension contributions, and 25 vacation days. Tuition is fully waived. The standard cycle is 3–5 years. Sri Lankan applicants typically enter with strong MSc credentials from Moratuwa, Colombo, an Indian IIT, a European/American university, or — increasingly — directly from ETH's own MSc programmes. Pre-aligned supervisor contact is essential; ETH PhD positions are project-based and posted via the D-INFK jobs board.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or closely-related field with strong grades (Swiss 5.5/6.0, first-class, or equivalent).
- check_circle Pre-aligned supervisor contact — ETH PhDs are position-based; identify a D-INFK faculty member, align research interest, and submit through their group.
- check_circle Research statement (3-5 pages), CV, Master's thesis, and 2-3 academic references.
- check_circle Publication record (workshops, conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICCV, CVPR, POPL) is a major positive for competitive positions.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or higher.
- check_circle Waived if your prior degree was taught entirely in English at a recognised institution.

Career Outcomes & PR
ETH CS PhDs route directly into senior research roles at Google Brain, Google Research, Microsoft Research, IBM Research Zurich, Meta AI, Apple ML, OpenAI, DeepMind, and at top academic positions (assistant professorships at ETH, EPFL, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge). Switzerland's 6-month post-PhD permit and STEM-exempt work-permit conversion under the non-EU quota applies — ETH CS PhDs almost universally clear the quota. Starting salaries for top positions: CHF 150k–200k+ at Swiss tech employers; US tech salaries often exceed USD 250k. Sri Lankan returnees with ETH CS PhDs typically build senior R&D leadership at WSO2, IFS R&D, or take lectureships at UoM, UCSC.
