Course Overview

The MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management — everyone calls it REM — is a two-year, 120-ECTS English-taught degree at the University of Freiburg, designed to close the gap between the engineering of renewable energy systems and the policy, finance and project-management work that decides whether they actually get built. Students choose one of two specialisations, Energy Systems Technology or Renewable Energy Planning and Management, with a cross-cutting Energy Conversion area open to everyone. The curriculum runs from solar, wind, biomass and hydro technology and grid integration through to energy economics, project finance, regulation and international energy policy.

Freiburg is the right city for this. It sits in Germany's sunniest region, hosts the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) — Europe's largest solar research institute — and has spent forty years as a live experiment in solar deployment, district energy and low-energy building. Students end up doing project work and theses with ISE, with regional utilities and with engineering firms in the Upper Rhine energy cluster, which is what makes REM more than a taught degree.

For Sri Lankan applicants this is one of the most directly employable master's degrees on this list. Sri Lanka's energy transition is not theoretical: the Ceylon Electricity Board's long-term generation plans lean heavily on wind and solar, the Mannar wind corridor is under active development, rooftop solar under the Soorya Bala Sangramaya scheme has scaled fast, and the 2022 fuel crisis converted energy security from a policy debate into a national emergency. What the sector lacks is engineers who can also do the economics — grid integration studies, power purchase agreement structuring, resource assessment, bankability analysis. That combination is exactly what REM trains, and it is why graduates from this programme find work with the CEB, the Sustainable Energy Authority, the IPP developers, and the ADB and World Bank energy programmes in Colombo.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical, energy, chemical, environmental), physics, or a closely related technical subject, with a strong average.
  • check_circle The admission committee looks for mathematics, physics, thermodynamics and electrical fundamentals; the Renewable Energy Planning and Management specialisation is more open to economics and environmental-science backgrounds with a technical component.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with a BSc Eng from Moratuwa (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical & Process), Peradeniya (Electrical & Electronic, Mechanical), Ruhuna, Jaffna or SLIIT, or a BSc in Physics or Engineering Technology, are the standard profile.
  • check_circle Relevant professional experience is weighted seriously — work at the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Sustainable Energy Authority, LECO, an IPP developer, an EPC contractor or a solar installation firm meaningfully strengthens a file.
  • check_circle Motivation letter naming the specialisation, CV, transcripts and academic or professional references.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants must obtain an APS certificate from the German Embassy in Colombo before the visa application — start this several months ahead.
  • check_circle Certified translations of transcripts and degree certificates, plus a blocked account meeting the current German proof-of-funds threshold for the visa.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle The programme is taught and examined entirely in English and requires evidence at CEFR C1.
  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5–7.0 Overall depending on the intake's published requirement.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 95–100 Overall.
  • check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
  • check_circle Waived where your previous degree was taught and examined entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from the English-medium engineering faculties at Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Jaffna and SLIIT submit a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar. Confirm acceptance in writing with the programme office before you skip the test.
  • check_circle German is not required for the degree. Free German courses run through the university language centre, and B1 German substantially widens the range of German employers who will hire you afterwards — in the energy sector specifically, utilities and grid operators often expect it.

Career Outcomes & PR

Germany grants an 18-month post-study residence permit to look for qualified work after a Master's, converting to an EU Blue Card and then a fast permanent-residence track. Energy engineering sits on Germany's shortage-occupation list, which eases both the job search and the visa. REM graduates work in project development and engineering for renewable developers and IPPs, in grid integration and system studies for transmission and distribution operators, in technical due diligence and project finance for banks and investors, in energy consultancy, and in research at Fraunhofer ISE and the Helmholtz energy centres. Employers in the German-speaking market include Fraunhofer ISE, Siemens Energy, Enercon, Nordex, Juwi, BayWa r.e., TÜV and DNV on certification, and the engineering arms of the big utilities. The international development track is equally live — GIZ, KfW, the ADB and the World Bank all recruit energy specialists with exactly this profile. Sri Lankan returnees fit the Ceylon Electricity Board's transmission and generation planning divisions, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, LECO, the Public Utilities Commission, the IPP and rooftop-solar developers, the engineering consultancies doing resource assessment and grid studies, and the ADB, World Bank and UNDP energy programmes based in Colombo.
