MSc Integrated Climate System Sciences
University of Hamburg
Deadline detail: March 31 (international window, opens February 15)
Course Overview
Integrated Climate System Sciences is a two-year, 120-ECTS Master's taught entirely in English at the University of Hamburg's School of Integrated Climate System Sciences. Hamburg is the centre of German climate research: the university sits alongside the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, and the programme is embedded in the CLICCS Cluster of Excellence. Students work with the same Earth-system models and computing infrastructure that produce Germany's contributions to the IPCC assessment cycle.
The degree is genuinely integrated rather than a physics course with a climate label. A common first-year core covers the physical climate system, atmospheric and ocean dynamics, climate modelling and statistical methods, and Earth-system data analysis. Students then choose a specialisation — physics of the climate system, biogeochemistry, or the economics and social science of climate — so it is possible to come out as a modeller, as a carbon-cycle scientist, or as a climate economist. Programming in Python, R or Fortran and hands-on model experiments run through the whole two years, and the second year is dominated by a research thesis attached to an active group.
The cost position is what makes this realistic for Sri Lankan families. Hamburg, like every German public university, charges no tuition fee — the only compulsory payment is the semester contribution, set at €402 for the 2026/27 winter semester, which covers the students' union, the Studierendenwerk and a public-transport pass for the city. Roughly €800 a year in contributions against a UK equivalent at £30,000+ is not a marginal difference. The budget that matters is living costs and the blocked account (Sperrkonto) that the German student visa requires, currently in the region of €11,900 for the first year.
The programme is quantitative and screens for it. Applicants need a Bachelor's in physics, mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, geosciences, environmental science, engineering or a comparably mathematical discipline — Sri Lankan BSc graduates from Colombo, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Moratuwa and Sri Jayewardenepura in physics, applied mathematics, or environmental/marine science are the standard fit, provided the transcript shows real calculus, linear algebra, statistics and physics credits.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) in meteorology, oceanography, geophysics, environmental physics or another Earth-system science — or another natural science carrying roughly 90 ECTS of relevant content, with a solid physics and mathematics base.
- check_circle Mechanical and civil engineering degrees are explicitly described by the department as having very low chances, so applicants from that background should not assume a route in.
- check_circle A Letter of Qualification of no more than three pages is part of the application and carries real weight — it must argue the fit between your transcript and the programme.
- check_circle A Class II Upper or better from a Sri Lankan state university is a realistic competitive bar; no numeric GPA cut-off is published.
- check_circle Programming experience in Python, R, MATLAB or Fortran is expected — state it explicitly in the CV even if it was self-taught. Degree recognition is checked against the anabin database, and an APS certificate may be required; we confirm both before you apply.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall — the programme's published requirement. No sub-scores are specified.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 95 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced, PTE, UNIcert III and telc C1 are also accepted.
- check_circle Waived if your prior degree was taught exclusively in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium science and engineering degrees qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter.
- check_circle No German is required for the degree. Free or heavily subsidised German courses are available and are worth taking for the internship and job-search phase.

Career Outcomes & PR
Germany gives non-EU graduates an 18-month post-study residence permit to look for work — the most generous job-search window in the EU — and it converts to a work permit or EU Blue Card on a qualifying offer. The department reports that more than 80% of its graduates move into academia, NGOs or consulting within six months, with roughly half going on to a PhD. Named graduate destinations include the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Stockholm University's Meteorological Institute, VU Amsterdam, UNSW Sydney, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Weather Service, and GIZ development-cooperation postings. Sri Lankan returnees route into the Department of Meteorology, the Climate Change Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment, the Disaster Management Centre, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, the International Water Management Institute's Colombo office, and UNDP, ADB and World Bank climate-adaptation programmes.
