Course Overview

Zayed University's Master of Science in Information Technology is delivered in English over four semesters at the College of Technological Innovation, on the Dubai and Abu Dhabi campuses. It is a professional master's aimed at graduates and working IT professionals, with a cyber security concentration alongside the general track — reflecting where UAE demand actually is. Coursework spans enterprise systems and architecture, networks and infrastructure, information security and cryptography, digital forensics, data management and analytics, cloud computing, and IT governance and project management, finishing with a capstone project or thesis.

The UAE's context makes this a more interesting degree than a generic IT master's elsewhere. The country has pushed national digital transformation harder than almost anywhere — the UAE Digital Government strategy, mandatory national cyber security frameworks, a substantial fintech and payments sector clustered in DIFC, and smart-city programmes in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi — and Zayed University, as a federal institution, is plugged into the government and semi-government side of that. Evening and flexible scheduling means many students in the cohort are working professionals, which changes the character of class discussion for the better.

For Sri Lankan IT professionals the Gulf calculation is different from the Western one. A large Sri Lankan professional community already works in Dubai and Abu Dhabi across banking IT, telecoms, aviation systems and government contractors; salaries carry no personal income tax; Colombo is a four-hour flight away; and tuition at a UAE federal university is well below the UK, Australian and North American equivalents. If your objective is to move into a Gulf IT career and progress into architecture, security or IT management roles, doing the master's inside the market you intend to work in — with local networks, local internships and a residency that continues after graduation — is often a better strategy than studying in Europe and then trying to enter the Gulf market cold.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A recognised bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, software engineering, information systems or a closely related discipline, with a good CGPA — typically 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  • check_circle Applicants from adjacent quantitative disciplines may be admitted with bridging or prerequisite courses in programming, databases and networks.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa (CSE, IT), Colombo UCSC, Peradeniya (Computer Engineering), SLIIT, NSBM, IIT, ICBT, APIIT and NIBM are the standard profile, as are professionals already working in IT roles in the Gulf.
  • check_circle Work experience is not always mandatory but is common in the cohort and strengthens a file, particularly for the cyber security concentration.
  • check_circle All non-UAE qualifications must be attested — by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo, then the UAE Embassy, with equivalency issued by the UAE Ministry of Education. Start this at least three months before the deadline; it is the single most common cause of a missed intake.
  • check_circle Application includes transcripts, degree certificate, CV, a statement of purpose and references; some intakes include an interview.
  • check_circle International students require a student residence visa sponsored by the university, plus a medical fitness test and Emirates ID registration after arrival.
  • check_circle Zayed University operates gender-separated campuses and facilities; confirm the arrangements for your intake and campus with admissions before applying.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0-6.5 Overall depending on the programme and intake — graduate programmes generally sit at the higher end.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 79-90 Overall.
  • check_circle EmSAT English is accepted and is often the more practical option for applicants already resident in the UAE.
  • check_circle Waived in some cases where your bachelor's degree was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium computing degrees should submit a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar and ask admissions to assess it. The waiver is discretionary; confirm in writing before deciding not to sit a test.
  • check_circle Teaching, assessment and the capstone are entirely in English.
  • check_circle Arabic is not required. Free Arabic classes are available, and functional Arabic is a genuine advantage for government and semi-government IT roles in the UAE, where much internal correspondence is bilingual.

Career Outcomes & PR

The UAE's post-study routes have widened considerably: graduates can apply for a job-seeker visa or a Green Visa giving self-sponsored residency, and outstanding graduates of accredited UAE universities with a high GPA can qualify for a ten-year Golden Visa that decouples residency from an employer — confirm the current thresholds with the ICP rather than relying on secondhand summaries. IT graduates in the UAE work across banking and fintech technology in DIFC, aviation systems at Emirates and Etihad, telecoms at e& and du, government digital transformation and smart-city programmes, oil and gas IT at ADNOC and its contractors, the regional offices of the global consultancies and system integrators, and a fast-growing cyber security sector driven by national regulatory frameworks. Salaries carry no personal income tax, which materially changes the comparison against a nominally higher gross salary in the UK or Australia. For Sri Lankan professionals the Gulf route also has a practical advantage: remittance economics, short flights home and an established Sri Lankan professional community. Returnees to Colombo bring enterprise-scale and regulated-environment experience that the local market values, moving into architecture, security and IT management roles at Dialog Axiata, SLT-Mobitel, the banks, John Keells IT, WSO2, IFS, Virtusa and the Big Four technology advisory practices.
