MSc Global History
University of Edinburgh
Course Overview
Edinburgh ranks among the world's top universities (QS top 30 globally) and its School of History, Classics and Archaeology is one of the largest and most respected in the UK. The MSc Global History is a one-year taught Master's examining the connected histories of empire, trade, migration, science and ideas across continents — a natural fit for graduates interested in South Asian, colonial and postcolonial history. Sri Lankan applicants from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya or international-curriculum backgrounds use it as a route into doctoral study, archives, heritage and policy work.
The programme combines core training in global-historical methods with optional courses spanning early-modern empires, the Indian Ocean world, decolonisation and environmental history, and culminates in a supervised dissertation. Edinburgh's libraries, the National Library of Scotland and strong links to museums and heritage bodies make it a strong base for those heading into research, the GLAM sector (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) or PhD work at Oxbridge and Ivy League schools.
