MSc in Finance
University of Lausanne (HEC Lausanne)
Course Overview
HEC Lausanne's MSc in Finance is one of continental Europe's most respected quantitative-finance degrees, taught in English from a lakeside campus a short train ride from Geneva's private-banking district. The programme offers specialisations in Corporate Finance, Asset & Risk Management, Quantitative Finance, and Data Analytics, built around rigorous training in financial econometrics, derivatives, portfolio theory, and Python/R modelling. HEC Lausanne is EQUIS- and AMBA-accredited, and the University of Lausanne sits comfortably inside the global top 150 (QS) — with the Swiss Finance Institute embedding its faculty at the frontier of research.
Sri Lankan applicants choose HEC Lausanne because Switzerland combines an almost symbolic tuition fee (public universities charge roughly CHF 580 per semester for everyone, local or international) with unrivalled access to the world's densest cluster of banks, asset managers, and commodity traders. Graduates who studied finance or quantitative subjects at Moratuwa, Colombo, Peradeniya, or CIMA/CFA-track backgrounds are well positioned. Living costs are high, but the fee saving versus a UK or US master's is enormous — and Geneva/Zurich salaries are among the highest in the world.

Switzerland lets non-EU graduates stay 6 months to seek work, and finance graduates are a priority hire under the skilled-worker quota. HEC Lausanne finance alumni place at UBS, Julius Baer, Pictet, Lombard Odier, Credit Suisse successor desks, BCG, and Geneva's commodity-trading houses (Trafigura, Vitol, Cargill). Starting salaries for finance master's graduates in Geneva/Zurich run CHF 90,000-110,000 — among the highest globally. The degree is also strong preparation for CFA charterholding.
