MSc Ecology and Population Genetics
University of Oulu
Deadline detail: January (Finnish joint application round via studyinfo.fi)
Course Overview
Oulu sits 170 km south of the Arctic Circle, and its Ecology and Genetics Research Unit uses that position as a laboratory: long-term study systems on boreal forest and peatland ecology, migratory bird populations, Arctic adaptation, and climate-driven range shifts that are measurable on a decadal scale here in a way they are not further south. The two-year MSc combines evolutionary and population genetics, quantitative ecology, conservation biology and heavy hands-on training in genomic data analysis, R and statistical modelling.
The field-and-genomics combination is the point. Students run their own sampling in the Oulanka Research Station and other field sites, then take the data through modern population-genomic pipelines, finishing with a research thesis that is normally embedded in an ongoing group project. For Sri Lankan biologists working on endemic species, forest fragmentation, human-elephant conflict or coral and marine population structure, the methodological training transfers directly — the questions are the same, the study system changes.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, botany, environmental science, agriculture or a closely related field, with a strong grade average (Second Upper or above).
- check_circle Coursework in genetics, ecology and statistics is expected; applicants short on quantitative background should evidence it in the motivation letter.
- check_circle Motivation letter setting out your research interest and why Oulu's groups specifically fit it.
- check_circle Officially certified degree certificate and transcripts — Finland enforces document authentication strictly, so start this early.
- check_circle Application is through the national Studyinfo joint application round, which opens in December and closes in early January for the following August intake.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (writing 5.5+).

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates go into environmental consultancy and impact assessment, conservation NGOs, government environment and forestry agencies, biodiversity and genomics roles in research institutes, and a large share continue to funded doctorates — Finnish doctoral education charges no tuition and doctoral researchers are salaried employees, which makes the MSc a low-friction route into a PhD. Finland grants a two-year post-study residence permit for job-seeking. Sri Lankan graduates return into the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Forest Department, IUCN and WWF country programmes, university biology departments, and the growing environmental due-diligence work attached to infrastructure and plantation projects.
