Course Overview
University of Malta's MSc Data Science is jointly run across the Faculty of ICT (Department of AI and Department of Computer Science) and the Faculty of Science (Statistics & Operations Research). The 90-ECTS programme runs over three semesters (18 months) and combines statistical foundations with applied data engineering and machine learning. Core modules cover statistical inference, regression and multivariate methods, machine learning, big data analytics, data engineering, time-series analysis, data visualisation, and a substantial dissertation in semester three.
Sri Lankan applicants from CS / Statistics / Mathematics / Engineering first-class or upper-second Bachelor's backgrounds (Moratuwa, Colombo UCSC, Sri Jayewardenepura Statistics, Peradeniya, NSBM, NIBM) treat this MSc as a route into data engineering and analytics careers across the EU. The Maltese iGaming and banking sectors run large analytics teams: Betsson, Tipico, Kindred, LeoVegas, HSBC Malta, MeDirect, Bank of Valletta. - check_circle Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, or a closely related quantitative discipline at Sri Lankan first / upper-second class equivalent.
- check_circle Demonstrated programming background (Python or R preferred), plus university-level linear algebra and probability.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa, Colombo UCSC, Sri Jayewardenepura Statistics, Peradeniya, SLIIT, NSBM, or NIBM with relevant transcript content are competitive.
- check_circle Motivation letter (max 1 page), CV, two academic references, and transcripts.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
- check_circle Maltese language not required — teaching is 100% in English.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's degree was taught entirely in English (Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degrees qualify with an MOI letter).
