MSc Computing
Imperial College London
Course Overview
The MSc Computing at Imperial's Department of Computing is a one-year conversion-style Master's for students with a strong quantitative background — maths, physics, engineering — who want to switch into computer science. It runs alongside Imperial's more specialised CS MScs (AI, ML, Software Engineering) and shares the same faculty and labs in the South Kensington campus.
The structure is intense by design: two terms of core modules covering algorithms, software engineering, networks, databases, logic and concurrency, followed by a six-month individual project supervised by a research-active academic. Sri Lankan applicants with strong A/L Maths or a numerate undergraduate degree consistently get offers here — Imperial weighs maths grades heavily.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree (2:1 or equivalent) in a quantitative subject — maths, physics, engineering, or a degree with substantial maths content. Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Colombo, SLIIT, or NSBM with a strong GPA (3.3+) are competitive.
- check_circle Strong mathematics background (calculus, linear algebra, discrete maths) is essential — Imperial often rejects applicants without it even if the overall GPA is high.
- check_circle No prior programming experience required, but evidence of logical/quantitative aptitude (A/L Maths grades, project work) helps.
- check_circle Two academic references plus a personal statement explaining why you want to switch into computing.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic (Standard): 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each section).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall (min 20 in each section).
- check_circle Waived if your degree was taught fully in English (most Sri Lankan state universities qualify — check with us first).

Career Outcomes & PR
Imperial Computing graduates are eligible for the 2-year UK Graduate Route. Software engineering is on the UK Shortage Occupation List, so the Skilled Worker visa path post-Graduate Route is realistic. Recent graduates have moved into Google, Meta, Amazon, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and London-based AI startups — the Imperial brand carries weight with both Big Tech and City firms.
