Course Overview

TU Dublin's MSc in Computer Science (Data Science) is a one-year, Level 9 taught master's on the Grangegorman campus in central Dublin, aimed at producing graduates who can take large volumes of raw data and extract defensible insight from it. The programme covers machine learning, data mining, statistical modelling, data visualisation, big-data infrastructure and programming for data analytics, together with research methods, and finishes with a substantial dissertation project — frequently done with an industry partner.

TU Dublin is Ireland's first technological university, formed from the merger of Dublin Institute of Technology with Tallaght and Blanchardstown, and it is the largest technological university in the country. Its computing school has an applied, industry-facing culture rather than a purely theoretical one, and the Applied Data Science research group anchors the master's. The location matters more than usual here: Dublin hosts the European headquarters of Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, LinkedIn, Stripe, Salesforce, Workday and Intel, along with the technology functions of the international banks and insurers clustered in the IFSC — the data-science graduate market in Dublin is one of the densest in Europe relative to the city's size.

For Sri Lankan applicants the Irish route has three specific advantages. Ireland is English-speaking, so there is no language barrier to the job market after graduation. The taught master's is one year rather than two, which halves living costs against a Dutch or German equivalent. And Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme gives holders of a Level 9 master's a 24-month permission to remain and work, which is long enough to secure a Critical Skills Employment Permit — and data-science and software roles have consistently featured on Ireland's Critical Skills Occupations List, which is the route to long-term residence.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle An honours bachelor's degree at 2.1 or better in Computer Science, Mathematics or another suitably numerate discipline with computing as a significant component.
  • check_circle A 2.2 honours degree is accepted where you have at least two years of relevant work experience — this is a genuinely useful alternative route and TU Dublin applies it seriously.
  • check_circle Programming ability and a mathematics and statistics foundation are assessed from the transcript; the machine-learning and data-mining modules do not start from first principles.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa (CSE, IT, Electronic & Telecommunication), Colombo UCSC (BCS, MIT), Peradeniya (Computer Engineering, Statistics), Kelaniya, SLIIT, NSBM, IIT, ICBT and APIIT are the standard profile; working professionals at WSO2, IFS, Virtusa, Sysco LABS, MillenniumIT ESP and the bank analytics teams fit the experience-based route.
  • check_circle Transcripts, degree certificate, CV, personal statement and references.
  • check_circle Sri Lanka is a visa-required country for Ireland. The study visa needs an acceptance letter, evidence of fees paid, private medical insurance and proof of access to at least €10,000 for living costs — build eight to ten weeks into the timeline after the offer.
  • check_circle Apply well before the stated deadline: TU Dublin assesses non-EU applications on a rolling basis, and late applications routinely fail on visa processing time rather than on merit.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no band below 6.0 is TU Dublin's usual postgraduate requirement.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall.
  • check_circle PTE Academic: 63 Overall.
  • check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
  • check_circle Waived where your prior degree was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution — most Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium computing degrees qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar. Confirm with TU Dublin admissions in writing, and note that the Irish immigration authority may assess English separately for the visa.
  • check_circle The entire programme is taught, assessed and examined in English.
  • check_circle No other language is required. Ireland is English-speaking, which is a large practical advantage over continental Europe when it comes to internships, part-time work and the graduate job search.

Career Outcomes & PR

Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme gives non-EEA graduates holding a Level 9 master's a 24-month permission to remain and work without an employment permit — one of the more generous post-study windows in Europe, and long enough to move onto a Critical Skills Employment Permit, which carries a fast route to long-term residence and family reunification. Data science, machine learning and software roles have consistently appeared on Ireland's Critical Skills Occupations List. Dublin's employer base for this degree is unusually deep for a city its size: Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, LinkedIn, Stripe, Salesforce, Workday, Intel and the analytics functions of the banks, insurers and fund administrators in the IFSC, plus the consultancies and a substantial indigenous technology sector. Starting salaries for data-science and analytics roles in Dublin generally run €40,000-55,000, rising quickly with experience. Be realistic about Dublin's housing market when budgeting — accommodation is the dominant cost and it is tight. Sri Lankan returnees route into the data science and machine learning teams at WSO2, IFS R&D, Sysco LABS, MillenniumIT ESP, Virtusa and Dialog Axiata, the analytics functions at HSBC Sri Lanka, Standard Chartered, Commercial Bank and John Keells, and the Big Four Colombo data and AI advisory practices.
