MSc in Climate Sciences
University of Bern
Course Overview
The University of Bern runs its MSc in Climate Sciences through the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, an interfaculty centre that brings together physics, geography, geology, biology, economics and history around a single subject. The programme is taught in English over two years and 120 ECTS. Bern's Physics Institute holds one of the longest and most cited records in the field — the Greenland and Antarctic ice-core work that established the link between atmospheric CO2 and temperature over the last 800,000 years was done here.
The structure is modular rather than a fixed syllabus. A core in climate physics, the carbon cycle, climate modelling and statistics is followed by a specialisation: atmospheric and climate physics, climate and Earth-system modelling, palaeoclimatology and climate reconstruction, economics and policy of climate change, or climate and environmental history. Practical work runs through the ice-core and isotope laboratories, field campaigns in the Alps, and the Centre's supercomputing resources. The second year is largely a research thesis attached to an active Oeschger group.
Tuition needs care, because Bern changed it. The university's fee schedule for students starting from the autumn 2026 semester is CHF 850 per semester in base tuition plus a CHF 1,700 per-semester surcharge for students without Swiss residency — roughly CHF 5,100 a year, or about LKR 1.89 million, plus small per-semester administrative charges. That is a sharp increase on the surcharge Bern charged previously, and students already enrolled before autumn 2026 are grandfathered on the old rate. Some programme pages still display the older figure, so confirm the current amount with Bern admissions before you budget. Even at the new rate it remains well below a UK equivalent at £28,000-£35,000 a year — the genuine cost of studying in Switzerland is living there.
Applicants need a quantitative Bachelor's — physics, mathematics, geography with a physical-science emphasis, geology, environmental science, meteorology or engineering — with a major or at least a 60-ECTS minor in a contributing discipline, and a degree less than ten years old. Up to 60 ECTS of bridging coursework can be imposed where a profile is short, and every shortlisted applicant is interviewed. Sri Lankan BSc graduates from Colombo, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Sri Jayewardenepura and Moratuwa fit the profile where the transcript shows calculus, differential equations, statistics and physics. For a country facing shifting monsoon behaviour, coastal erosion and increasingly erratic Yala and Maha seasons, this is a directly applicable qualification rather than an abstract one.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) with a major — or at least a 60-ECTS minor — in a contributing discipline: physics, mathematics, geography, geology, environmental science, meteorology, quantitative biology or engineering.
- check_circle The degree must normally be less than ten years old, and Bern asks for grades at a 'good' standard or above; a Class II Upper or better from a Sri Lankan state university is the realistic bar.
- check_circle Applicants can apply once they hold 150 ECTS, before the Bachelor's is formally complete.
- check_circle Up to 60 ECTS of bridging coursework may be imposed where the prior degree is short on physics, mathematics or Earth-science credits — expect this to extend the degree.
- check_circle An interview is a mandatory part of admission. Applicants who require a study visa must apply within the regular deadline; Bern explicitly closes the late application window to them.
English Proficiency
- check_circle Bern publishes no fixed IELTS or TOEFL threshold for this programme — the university treats English competence as the applicant's own responsibility where no certificate is specified.
- check_circle We still advise Sri Lankan applicants to hold IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 or above: the teaching, the interview and the thesis all assume that level, and a certificate strengthens the visa file.
- check_circle Because no certificate is mandated, applicants from English-medium Sri Lankan science degrees effectively have a waiver route — confirm it in writing with the admissions office before skipping the test.
- check_circle German is not required for the degree; Bern offers language courses and basic German helps considerably with housing and everyday administration.

Career Outcomes & PR
Switzerland allows non-EU graduates six months to seek work after completing a degree, with conversion to a work permit under the cantonal quota system for skilled roles. Bern climate graduates move into PhD positions across the Oeschger Centre, ETH Zurich, EPFL, WSL and the Paul Scherrer Institute; into MeteoSwiss and the Federal Office for the Environment; into reinsurance climate-risk teams at Swiss Re and Zurich Insurance, where Zurich is a global centre for catastrophe modelling; and into the international climate bodies clustered in Geneva — the WMO, IPCC secretariat, UNEP and UNFCCC-adjacent organisations. Sri Lankan returnees route into the Department of Meteorology, the Climate Change Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment, the Disaster Management Centre, NARA, the International Water Management Institute in Colombo, and UNDP, ADB and World Bank climate-adaptation programmes.
