Course Overview

Bayes Business School is the business school of City, University of London, and it sits on Bunhill Row — a ten-minute walk from the Bank of England and the City's insurance, banking and consulting employers. The Business Analytics MSc is a twelve-month, full-time degree with no part-time route, aimed squarely at producing analysts who can take a messy commercial dataset and turn it into a decision a board will act on.

The teaching is applied rather than theoretical. Core modules cover statistics and applied econometrics, machine learning, data-management and SQL, optimisation and decision modelling, visual analytics, and the ethics and governance of data use, taught in Python and R. Electives let students weight the degree toward marketing analytics, financial analytics, supply chain or people analytics, and the year finishes with an applied research project or a business consultancy project run with an external client.

The cost is what a Sri Lankan family has to weigh. International tuition for the September 2026 intake is £31,000, with a £2,000 non-refundable deposit, half the balance due at registration and the remainder in January. Add UKVI-mandated London maintenance funds, the Immigration Health Surcharge and the visa fee, and the first year lands well above LKR 18 million all-in. Against that, the degree is one year rather than two, and the UK Graduate Route gives two years of unsponsored work rights afterwards — which is the whole basis of the return calculation.

Bayes accepts applicants from any discipline provided numeracy can be demonstrated, so this is a viable conversion route for a Sri Lankan graduate in economics, mathematics, engineering, statistics, computing or a quantitative business degree. Bayes publishes its own Sri Lanka equivalence: a four-year Bachelor Special or Professional degree at a 2:1 standard, a grade of B+, or a GPA of 3.3/4.0 maps to a UK upper second; a GPA of 3.0 maps to a 2:2 and is below the bar. No prior work experience is required.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A UK upper second-class (2:1) honours degree or the overseas equivalent. Bayes' own Sri Lanka table treats a four-year Bachelor Special or Professional degree at 2:1, a grade of B+, or a GPA of 3.3/4.0 as equivalent — a GPA of 3.0 maps to a 2:2 and does not meet the requirement.
  • check_circle Any discipline is accepted. Quantitative backgrounds are preferred, but graduates from humanities, languages and the natural sciences are admitted where numeracy is demonstrated through modules, professional qualifications or work.
  • check_circle No work experience is required, so this is open to fresh graduates from Colombo, Peradeniya, Moratuwa, Jayewardenepura, SLIIT, NSBM and the UK-affiliated programmes.
  • check_circle Personal statement, CV, academic transcripts and references. Evidence of Python, R, SQL or advanced Excel work strengthens an application from a non-quantitative degree.
  • check_circle A £2,000 non-refundable tuition deposit is required to hold the place, offset against the fee.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no section below 6.0. IELTS General Training and IELTS Indicator are not accepted; the One Skill Retake is.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall with Listening 19, Speaking 22, Reading 20 and Writing 19, from a single test — MyBest scores are not accepted.
  • check_circle PTE Academic (in-person only): 62 Overall with no section below 60.
  • check_circle The only stated exemption is prior degree-level study in a majority English-speaking country on the Home Office list, so a Sri Lankan English-medium degree does not by itself waive the test — budget for IELTS and sit it early.
  • check_circle Bayes' presessional English route is available where a score falls slightly short; it must be planned into the timeline because it starts before the main September intake.

Career Outcomes & PR

The UK Graduate Route lets master's graduates stay two years after the course without employer sponsorship — long enough to build a track record before needing a Skilled Worker visa. Bayes names Accenture, Allianz, AXA, BearingPoint, Bloomberg, CBRE, Deloitte, J.P. Morgan, Knight Frank, Moody's and PwC among the employers its graduates go to, and runs a dedicated MSc careers fair with more than sixty recruiters. Typical roles are business analyst, data analyst, pricing analyst, risk analyst, marketing-analytics consultant and management consultant — the City's insurance and banking cluster is the immediate market, and the school's location inside it is a real advantage. Sri Lankan returnees route into analytics and data-science functions at John Keells Holdings, MAS Holdings, Brandix, Dialog Axiata, Commercial Bank, HSBC SL, Standard Chartered SL, LSEG Technology and the Colombo advisory practices of the Big Four, where UK-trained analytics graduates are still scarce.
