Course Overview
POSTECH's MS in Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) sits inside Korea's most important materials research ecosystem — the university was founded by POSCO, the world's fifth-largest steelmaker, and the department maintains deep ties to Korea's semiconductor, battery, and steel industries. Research groups cover semiconductor processing, energy materials (batteries, solar), structural metals, and nanomaterials.
Sri Lankan applicants joining the program are funded through TA/RA scholarship — full tuition waiver plus ~KRW 1,400,000 monthly stipend — and gain access to facilities like POSCO's industrial labs and the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (one of the few synchrotron radiation facilities in Asia). The two-year thesis-track Master's is the standard launchpad into either Korean industry or a PhD.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Physics, or related engineering field (GPA 3.5/4.0 equivalent).
- check_circle Research statement and target-lab identification — POSTECH MSE requires you to align with a specific faculty supervisor.
- check_circle Two academic references from undergraduate professors.
- check_circle Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, solid-state physics, and at least one materials characterization method.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 79 Overall, or TOEIC: 750.
- check_circle Waived with a Medium of Instruction letter if your degree was taught in English.

Career Outcomes & PR
POSTECH MSE graduates feed directly into POSCO, Samsung Electronics (semiconductors and displays), SK Hynix, LG Energy Solution, and Samsung SDI — Korea's industrial spine. Many continue into PhDs at POSTECH or top US programs. Korea's D-10 visa gives 6 months of post-graduation job search, and Materials Master's holders convert to E-7 employment visas with chaebol sponsorship.
