Course Overview
Ewha's graduate programme in Computer Science and Engineering is a two-year, thesis-based MS run out of the university's engineering and artificial intelligence faculties in central Seoul. Ewha established a College of Artificial Intelligence — with departments in computer engineering and cybersecurity, plus majors in artificial intelligence and data science — on top of a College of Engineering that has been offering MS and PhD degrees in computer science for years. Research areas span machine learning and AI, computer vision, data science, software engineering, information security, computer networks and human-computer interaction.
The structure is a Korean research master's: taught coursework in the first year, laboratory work throughout, and a thesis supervised by a faculty member. That makes the supervisor relationship the substance of the degree — admission and funding both flow through it, and Korean research labs are typically well resourced because national research funding for AI and software has been aggressive over the last decade. Many courses at graduate level are taught in English, and international students are actively recruited, but the mix varies by department and by semester.
Two things matter for a Sri Lankan applicant. The first, and non-negotiable, is that Ewha is a women's university and accepts applications from female applicants only — which makes this one of the more interesting options in this catalogue precisely because Sri Lankan women are under-represented in postgraduate computer science abroad, and Korea funds them well. The second is the economics: Korean graduate tuition is a fraction of the Western equivalent, research assistantships in funded labs are common, and the Korean Government Scholarship Program covers postgraduate study in full. Korea also has one of the world's densest technology industries — Samsung, LG, Naver, Kakao, SK and Hyundai all run substantial AI and software research operations — and the D-10 job-seeking visa gives up to two years after graduation to enter it.

Academic

Korean research master's admission runs on laboratory fit — read the faculty research pages, write individually to two or three professors whose work overlaps with your final-year project, and attach a CV, transcript and a specific note on their published work. This step also determines whether you are offered a research assistantship.
- check_circle Application includes transcripts, degree certificate, a study plan, two academic references, financial certification and passport copies, with certified English translations of all Sri Lankan documents and, frequently, apostille or consular authentication.
- check_circle Financial certification of a specified minimum balance is required for both admission and the D-2 student visa, applied for at the Korean Embassy in Colombo with the Certificate of Admission.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0-6.5 Overall is the usual benchmark for English-track graduate admission at Ewha.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 80-90 Overall.
- check_circle TOPIK Level 3 or above is the alternative route for applicants intending to study in Korean; for the English track it is not required at admission.
- check_circle Waived in some cases where your bachelor's degree was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium computing and engineering degrees should submit a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar and ask the international admissions office to assess it. The waiver is discretionary; confirm in writing.
- check_circle Many graduate courses are taught in English, but the proportion varies by department and semester, and laboratory life is frequently bilingual. Ask your prospective supervisor directly what language the lab actually runs in — this is the practical question, not the catalogue listing.
- check_circle Free and subsidised Korean classes are available through the Korean Language Education Centre. Reaching TOPIK level 3 or 4 during the degree transforms your employability with Korean employers and raises the part-time work hours permitted on a D-2 visa.

Career Outcomes & PR
Korea grants graduates the D-10 job-seeking visa for up to two years, converting to an E-7 specialised-occupation work visa on employment, with the points-based F-2-7 residence route available thereafter — a Korean degree, Korean language ability and salary all score toward it. Korea's technology sector is one of the largest in the world relative to the size of the economy: Samsung Electronics, LG, SK hynix, Naver, Kakao, Coupang, Hyundai's software and mobility divisions, and the national research institutes ETRI and KIST all recruit AI, software and security graduates, and government funding for AI research has been sustained and heavy. A meaningful share of MS graduates continue to a PhD in Korea, where positions are funded, or move on to doctoral study in North America and Europe with Korean lab publications on their record. Be clear that Korean-language ability is the difference between a wide and a narrow job market: the global companies hire in English, most of the rest do not. Sri Lankan returnees route into the machine learning, data and platform engineering teams at WSO2, IFS R&D, Sysco LABS, MillenniumIT ESP, Virtusa and Dialog Axiata, the analytics and risk functions at the Colombo banks, the Big Four technology advisory practices, and university computer science departments, where a research master's with publications is a strong academic platform.
