Course Overview

INSEAD's Master in Management is the school's pre-experience degree — the one designed for people in their early twenties who have finished a bachelor's degree and have little or no full-time work history, as distinct from the MBA, which expects several years of it. It runs one year and takes the INSEAD method that made the MBA famous — case-based, relentlessly international, heavily peer-driven — and applies it to a cohort at the start of a career rather than in the middle of one. The curriculum is a general management core: accounting, finance, marketing, strategy, operations, organisational behaviour, economics and data analysis, followed by electives and a capstone.

The structure is genuinely multi-campus and you should understand it before applying. The core terms are taught at INSEAD's Fontainebleau campus near Paris, students then rotate to the Asia campus in Singapore for a term of electives, and three short experiential modules run in Abu Dhabi, China and San Francisco. That means the Singapore period is a substantial and guaranteed part of the programme rather than an option — but the centre of gravity, and your principal student visa, will be French. For a Sri Lankan applicant that distinction matters practically, so plan the immigration side around France with a Singapore period inside it, and confirm the current campus sequence with admissions, since INSEAD adjusts it.

The value proposition for a Sri Lankan graduate is specific. INSEAD's recruiting relationships with the strategy consultancies and the global corporates are as strong as any business school in the world, and the MIM gives access to that pipeline without the three-to-five years of prior work experience an MBA demands — which is exactly the gap that traps ambitious Sri Lankan graduates who cannot get an international-standard first job at home. The cohort is deliberately multinational, with no dominant nationality, so a Sri Lankan student is not an outlier. The cost is high in absolute terms but roughly half of INSEAD's own MBA, and one year rather than two means one year of forgone earnings rather than two.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A completed Bachelor's degree in any discipline, with a strong academic record — this is a pre-experience programme, so your transcript carries more weight than it would in an MBA application.
  • check_circle Little or no full-time work experience is expected; internships, part-time work, entrepreneurial projects and substantial extracurricular leadership are what the committee reads instead.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Colombo, Moratuwa, Sri Jayewardenepura, Peradeniya, IIT, NSBM, APIIT and SLIIT, and from UK and Australian transnational degrees delivered in Colombo, are all represented in this kind of cohort.
  • check_circle GMAT or GRE is required. INSEAD's cohorts sit at the high end of the distribution, so treat the test as the single most controllable part of your application and give it months, not weeks.
  • check_circle Essays, a CV, transcripts, and recommendations; shortlisted candidates are interviewed by INSEAD alumni, often two separate interviews.
  • check_circle INSEAD assesses international exposure and language ability explicitly as admission criteria — see the language section below, because this is where applicants are most often caught out.
  • check_circle A French long-stay student visa is normally the primary permit, applied for through the Campus France 'Études en France' procedure with an interview at Campus France Colombo, and a separate Singapore student pass covers the Asia campus term. Start both as early as INSEAD's admissions office will let you.
  • check_circle A deposit is payable to confirm your place after admission and is deducted from the total fee.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle The programme is taught entirely in English and full professional fluency is assumed.
  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.5 Overall, or TOEFL iBT 105, is the realistic standard for a cohort of this calibre, though the GMAT or GRE verbal score often functions as the primary evidence.
  • check_circle A test waiver is commonly available where your entire degree was taught and examined in English — most Sri Lankan English-medium degree holders qualify, and INSEAD will confirm this on request.
  • check_circle INSEAD's distinctive language requirement is the one to plan for: the school requires practical fluency in English plus knowledge of a second language at entry, with a third language required before graduation. Sinhala or Tamil counts as a language, so most Sri Lankan applicants already meet the entry condition — but check exactly how INSEAD assesses and certifies it, since informal fluency is not the same as documented proficiency.
  • check_circle For the third language, French is the pragmatic choice given the Fontainebleau base; the Alliance Française in Colombo and Kotte can get you to the required level before you leave, which is far easier than doing it during a compressed one-year programme.

Career Outcomes & PR

INSEAD's careers operation is one of the strongest in global business education, and the MIM feeds the same recruiter base as the MBA at entry level — the strategy consultancies (McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Kearney, Roland Berger), the investment banks and financial institutions, the technology firms (Amazon, Google, Microsoft and the fast-growing European and Asian platforms), the consumer goods and luxury groups (Unilever, P&G, Nestlé, LVMH, L'Oréal), and corporate strategy and rotational leadership programmes. Placement is genuinely global, and the Singapore term gives real access to the Asian recruiting market alongside the European one. On immigration, French master's graduates may apply for the APS, a 12-month temporary residence permit to seek work or start a business, converting to a work permit on a qualifying offer; Singapore's employment pass routes are separate and employer-driven, and Singapore's salary thresholds for passes have risen materially, so treat a Singapore-based outcome as achievable but not automatic. Sri Lankan returnees enter strategy, corporate development and general management tracks at John Keells, MAS Holdings, Hayleys, Dialog Axiata, Brandix, Aitken Spence and Hemas, and the Colombo offices of the international consultancies — where an INSEAD credential is recognised immediately.
