MEng in Water Resources Engineering
University of Guelph
Deadline detail: February 1 (September intake); rolling thereafter if places remain
Course Overview
Guelph's Master of Engineering in Water Resources Engineering is a course-based professional master's run by the School of Engineering, aimed at engineers who want to work on how water moves through, and is managed across, rural and urban watersheds. The field at Guelph combines hydrology and hydraulics with ecological and agricultural systems — the university's roots in the Ontario Agricultural College mean the water programme has always been as strong on drainage, irrigation, soil-water and non-point-source pollution as on urban stormwater and municipal infrastructure.
Coursework spans surface and groundwater hydrology, hydraulic design, watershed modelling, stormwater management, water quality and treatment, GIS and remote sensing for water systems, and climate-change impacts on hydrological regimes. The MEng is completed with a major project or design study rather than a research thesis, which makes it faster than a MASc and better suited to an engineer heading back into practice; it can also be combined with an International Development Studies designation, which is worth knowing about if your intended career is in development or donor-funded water infrastructure.
For Sri Lankan engineers this is about as directly applicable as a foreign master's gets. Sri Lanka has one of the world's oldest irrigation civilisations and one of its most water-stressed near futures: an ancient tank cascade system under strain, the Mahaweli scheme, chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology linked to water quality in the dry zone, recurrent flooding in the Kelani and Kalu basins, saltwater intrusion along the coast, and a national water supply network still extending coverage. The Irrigation Department, the Mahaweli Authority, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Disaster Management Centre all need people who can build and defend hydrological models rather than only operate infrastructure. Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit gives up to three years to gain North American practice experience first.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A four-year bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, agricultural, water resources or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognised institution.
- check_circle Guelph's Graduate Studies minimum is a B average (roughly 75 per cent or a 3.0 GPA) in the final two years of the bachelor's degree.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with a BSc Eng in Civil Engineering from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna or Jaffna, or in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering from Peradeniya, are the standard profile; IESL-accredited Sri Lankan engineering degrees carry Washington Accord standing, which helps both here and later with professional registration in Ontario.
- check_circle Fluid mechanics, hydrology or hydraulics coursework in the bachelor's degree is expected; applicants from adjacent disciplines may be admitted with prerequisite modules.
- check_circle Professional experience at the Irrigation Department, the Mahaweli Authority, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, the Central Environmental Authority, a municipal council or a consulting engineering firm strengthens a file considerably.
- check_circle Transcripts, degree certificate, statement of interest, CV and two references. The MEng is course-based, so you do not need to secure a research supervisor in advance.
- check_circle A Canadian study permit requires a provincial attestation letter, proof of funds, biometrics and often an upfront medical — allow three to four months after the offer.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no band below 6.0.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 89 Overall with no section below 21.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 60 Overall.
- check_circle Waived where your bachelor's degree was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from the English-medium engineering faculties at Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna and Jaffna commonly qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar. Confirm with Guelph Graduate Studies in writing before omitting a test result.
- check_circle The Post-Graduation Work Permit separately requires a language test result at CLB 7 for university graduates regardless of any admission waiver — plan to sit the test before you graduate, not after.

Career Outcomes & PR
A Canadian master's degree qualifies graduates for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years, subject to the CLB 7 language requirement now applied to PGWP applicants, which feeds Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class and the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program. Water resources engineers in Ontario work for consulting engineering firms (Stantec, WSP, GHD, AECOM, Wood, Matrix), for the Conservation Authorities that manage Ontario's watersheds, for municipalities on stormwater and water and wastewater infrastructure, for the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, and for the agricultural drainage and irrigation sector. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario runs through Professional Engineers Ontario, which assesses academic qualifications, experience and the Professional Practice Examination for internationally trained applicants — a Canadian master's plus Canadian experience simplifies that considerably. Graduate salaries in Ontario consulting engineering run roughly CAD 65,000-80,000. Sri Lankan returnees fit the Irrigation Department, the Mahaweli Authority, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, the Water Resources Board, the Disaster Management Centre and the Department of Meteorology, plus the engineering consultancies doing flood modelling, EIA hydrology and water infrastructure design, and the ADB, World Bank, JICA and UNDP water and climate-adaptation programmes running out of Colombo — a portfolio of donor-funded water projects that consistently needs engineers with formal modelling training.
