Course Overview

SFU's Beedie School of Business runs its Full-Time MBA out of the Segal Graduate School in downtown Vancouver — a restored heritage building on West Hastings, deliberately placed in the financial district rather than on the Burnaby mountain campus. The programme is sixteen months, which is the sweet spot for a career-change MBA: long enough for a real internship or consulting project, short enough that the opportunity cost of leaving work is contained. Beedie is AACSB and EQUIS accredited and is one of the more research-intensive business schools in Canada.

The curriculum runs a compressed core in strategy, finance, accounting, marketing, operations, organisational behaviour and analytics, then opens into concentrations and an applied capstone — typically a live consulting engagement with a Vancouver company. Beedie leans harder than most Canadian MBAs into technology and innovation management, which reflects Vancouver's actual economy: a large and growing tech sector (Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce and Electronic Arts all have significant Vancouver operations), clean tech, film and digital media, plus mining and resource finance headquartered on Howe Street.

For Sri Lankan applicants there are two things that make this specific MBA worth examining. The first is cost: Canadian MBA tuition sits well below comparable US and UK programmes, and a sixteen-month degree means one year of living costs rather than two. The second is the Post-Graduation Work Permit — a master's-level Canadian degree of at least eight months qualifies you for a PGWP of up to three years, which is the longest post-study work window of any major destination, and British Columbia's Provincial Nominee Program has streams that draw on exactly that cohort. For a Sri Lankan manager with five to eight years at a bank, a conglomerate, an apparel group or an IT firm, this is a credible route from mid-management in Colombo to a Canadian corporate role.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognised institution, with a solid academic record — Beedie typically looks for a B average or better in the final two years.
  • check_circle Two or more years of full-time professional work experience after graduation; the class average sits meaningfully higher than the minimum, and a strong career trajectory matters more than raw years.
  • check_circle GMAT or GRE is normally required. Beedie publishes a competitive GMAT range and does grant waivers in defined circumstances — for applicants with a professional designation such as CA Sri Lanka, CIMA or CFA, or with substantial quantitative work history, ask about the waiver before you book the test.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with a bachelor's from Colombo, Peradeniya, Moratuwa, Sri Jayewardenepura or an accredited private-sector or UK-affiliate degree, plus experience at HSBC, Standard Chartered, Commercial Bank, John Keells, Hayleys, MAS, Brandix, Dialog, WSO2, IFS or a Big Four Colombo practice, are the standard profile.
  • check_circle A résumé, essays, two references and an admissions interview.
  • check_circle A Canadian study permit requires a provincial attestation letter, proof of funds and, for most applicants, biometrics and an upfront medical — build three to four months into the timeline.
  • check_circle Apply in an early round: Beedie's scholarship pool is allocated as files are decided, and late applicants compete for what is left.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall with no band below 6.5 is the usual expectation for the MBA.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall with no section below 20.
  • check_circle PTE Academic: 65 Overall.
  • check_circle Duolingo English Test is accepted in some cycles — confirm before relying on it.
  • check_circle A waiver is available where you have completed a full degree taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution in a country where English is an official language of instruction. Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degrees frequently qualify but the waiver is discretionary for MBA admission — request it in writing with a Medium of Instruction letter before deciding to skip the test.
  • check_circle Note separately that a Post-Graduation Work Permit now requires a language test result at CLB 7 for university graduates, and that test must be taken regardless of any admission waiver — plan for it before you graduate, not after.

Career Outcomes & PR

A master's-level Canadian degree qualifies graduates for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years — the longest post-study work window among the major destinations — subject to meeting the CLB 7 language requirement that now applies to PGWP applicants. That three-year runway is what makes the Canadian MBA arithmetic work: it is long enough to accumulate the skilled Canadian work experience that Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class and British Columbia's Provincial Nominee Program tech and skilled-worker streams are built around. Beedie MBA graduates go into management consulting, corporate finance and banking on Howe Street, product and programme management in Vancouver's technology sector, operations and supply chain, and the resource and clean-tech companies headquartered in BC. The applied capstone consulting project is frequently the route into the first role. Sri Lankan returnees carry an internationally recognised, AACSB and EQUIS accredited MBA into senior commercial roles at the listed conglomerates, the banks, the apparel and logistics groups, and the multinational and BPO operations in Colombo — and for those who came in with a CA Sri Lanka, CIMA or CFA background, the MBA is usually the piece that moves them from technical specialist to general management.
