Course Overview
The Master of Education (MEd) at the University of Canterbury — a top-tier New Zealand university with a long-established, research-active School of Educational Studies and Leadership — is a flexible postgraduate degree for teachers, education professionals, and graduates who want to specialise. Students choose from pathways such as educational leadership, inclusive/special education, e-learning, and literacy, combining coursework with a supervised research project or thesis. Canterbury's education faculty is well regarded across the Asia-Pacific and connects to New Zealand's inquiry-led, equity-focused schooling model.
For Sri Lankan educators, this MEd deepens expertise and opens leadership and specialist roles without necessarily requiring a prior teaching qualification for the research pathway. New Zealand offers a 3-year Post-Study Work Visa for Master's graduates, and Christchurch offers a high quality of life at lower cost than Auckland. The qualification is valued by schools, ministries, and international schools across the region — and applies directly back into Sri Lanka's education sector.
