Master's Programme in Global Health
Karolinska Institutet
Course Overview
Karolinska Institutet (KI) — host of the Nobel Assembly that awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine — is the world's #1 medical university in QS rankings (QS Medicine 2024) and a global reference point for medical research. KI's Master's Programme in Global Health is delivered through the Department of Global Public Health, with strong WHO-collaboration ties, the Stockholm Environment Institute partnership, and active research programmes in low- and middle-income country health systems across South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. The programme is intentionally interdisciplinary — bringing together public health, epidemiology, health economics, anthropology, and policy.
Sri Lankan applicants — typically MBBS graduates from Colombo / Peradeniya / Kelaniya / Rajarata, plus BSc Public Health / Nursing / Pharmacy / Allied Health holders, plus Ministry of Health and NGO public health professionals — choose KI Global Health for: the credibility of the world's #1 medical university, 1-year accelerated structure (60 ECTS), the deep WHO and Sida (Swedish International Development Agency) network, and Sweden's 12-month post-study residence permit. Tuition for non-EU students sits at ~SEK 225,000 for the full 1-year programme (LKR 7.2M total). The curriculum covers global health metrics, epidemiology, health systems and policy, infectious and non-communicable diseases, sexual and reproductive health, plus a Master's thesis often conducted with WHO / Sida-supported research sites — including historical Sri Lanka collaborations. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior epidemiologist, NCD programme lead, and public health consultant roles at the Ministry of Health, the Health Promotion Bureau, the Epidemiology Unit, WHO Sri Lanka, the Family Planning Association, IFC, plus academic posts at PGIM and the Faculty of Medicine Colombo / Peradeniya / Kelaniya.
