MA Media Studies
University of Amsterdam
Course Overview
The University of Amsterdam's MA Media Studies is delivered by the Faculty of Humanities at the Netherlands' top-ranked university and a global top-60 institution, consistently top 20 worldwide for communication and media studies. The one-year, English-taught master's offers distinctive tracks — including New Media and Digital Culture, Film Studies, Television and Cross-Media Culture, and Media Studies (research) — combining critical theory with the study of platforms, data, and contemporary visual culture. Amsterdam is one of Europe's leading creative and digital-media hubs, and the program connects to a vibrant research and industry ecosystem.
Sri Lankan applicants from media, communications, humanities, and arts backgrounds at Colombo, Kelaniya (Mass Communication), Sri Jayewardenepura, and Peradeniya choose UvA for its global reputation, the one-year format, and the Netherlands' strong post-study work offer. Programs are taught entirely in English, and an English-medium Bachelor's typically supports an IELTS waiver via an MOI letter. Graduates qualify for the Netherlands' orientation-year (zoekjaar) residence permit — 12 months to find skilled work — with a route to the highly skilled migrant scheme. Returnees route into senior digital-media, content-strategy, and communications roles at Dialog Axiata, John Keells, the leading Colombo media and digital agencies, and the development-sector communications teams at UN agencies and INGOs.
