Course Overview
Osgoode Hall Law School at York University is one of Canada's most distinguished law schools, located in Toronto — the country's legal and financial centre. Its LLM offers both course-based and research-based streams across specialisations including business law, tax law, dispute resolution, and constitutional / international law. For Sri Lankan Attorneys-at-Law and LLB graduates from Colombo Law Faculty, APIIT, KDU or NSBM, Osgoode is a recognised route into Canadian legal academia, in-house roles and the NCA accreditation pathway toward Canadian bar admission.
The one-year programme combines advanced coursework with a major research paper or thesis under faculty supervision. Importantly, an Osgoode LLM does not by itself qualify you to practise law in Ontario — internationally trained lawyers must complete the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) exams, articling and the Law Society of Ontario licensing process; the LLM can strengthen that path and open in-house and policy roles. Canada's 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit and Express Entry PR pathway make Toronto a strong long-term base.

Academic

English Proficiency

- check_circle Waived if your LLB was taught and assessed entirely in English (most Sri Lankan LLB graduates qualify with an MOI letter).

Career Outcomes & PR
Osgoode LLM graduates are eligible for the 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit and a clear PR pathway via Express Entry. Graduates move into in-house counsel and policy roles, legal-research positions, and (after completing the NCA route and Law Society of Ontario licensing) private practice. Toronto's Bay Street firms and financial-sector legal teams are major recruiters. Sri Lankan returnees route into corporate-commercial and international practice at Colombo firms and as in-house counsel for banks and conglomerates.
