Master of Laws (LLM)
Columbia Law School
Course Overview
Columbia Law School's Master of Laws (LLM) is one of the most prestigious graduate law programs in the world, at an Ivy League university ranked among the global top 10 for law. The one-year LLM lets internationally trained lawyers design a course of study across Columbia's exceptional strengths in corporate, financial, international, human rights, and constitutional law, taught by a world-leading faculty in the heart of New York City — the global capital of finance and international law. The program is a recognised pathway for foreign lawyers toward eligibility to sit the New York Bar examination.
Sri Lankan applicants — top law graduates from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, attorneys-at-law from Sri Lanka Law College, and LLB holders from UK / Australian programmes — treat the Columbia LLM as the elite credential for international corporate and human-rights practice. Graduates of this OPT-eligible master's qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training, and eligible candidates can sit the New York Bar. Columbia LLM graduates enter the world's leading firms and international organisations. Returnees command the most senior roles at top Colombo commercial firms (Julius & Creasy, F.J. & G. de Saram, Nithya Partners), in-house counsel leadership at John Keells, Dialog, and Brandix, and roles with the UN, international arbitration bodies, and development banks.
