LLM in Asian Legal Studies
National University of Singapore
Course Overview
The NUS LLM in Asian Legal Studies is a one-year, English-taught specialisation at Asia's top-ranked law school, built for lawyers who want deep expertise in the legal systems, commercial practices and dispute-resolution frameworks across Asia. Sri Lankan LLB graduates and Attorneys-at-Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, APIIT and KDU use it to position themselves for cross-border practice across South and Southeast Asia.
You choose from electives spanning Chinese law, Indian law, ASEAN economic integration, Islamic finance, international commercial arbitration and comparative constitutional law, and complete a supervised research paper. NUS sits at the heart of Singapore's role as a global arbitration and finance hub, with direct exposure to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre and the Singapore International Commercial Court.
An LLM is an academic qualification, not a licence to practise: it does not by itself admit you to the Sri Lankan bar or the Singapore Bar. It strengthens your profile for in-house counsel, arbitration, policy and academic roles, and for further qualifying examinations.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) or equivalent — Sri Lankan LLB and Attorney-at-Law qualifications are accepted.
- check_circle A good honours classification (upper second-class or higher); strong applicants with relevant legal experience are favoured.
- check_circle Personal statement outlining your interest in Asian legal systems.
- check_circle Two academic or professional references and a detailed CV.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (min 6.5 in each band).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your LLB was taught and examined entirely in English — a medium-of-instruction letter from your Sri Lankan university confirms this.

Career Outcomes & PR
NUS Law is consistently ranked the best law school in Asia, and its LLM graduates move into international firms (Allen & Gledhill, Rajah & Tann, WongPartnership), in-house counsel teams at regional banks and MNCs, and arbitration institutions such as the SIAC. Graduates with a qualifying job offer can apply for Singapore's Employment Pass; the EP can later support an LTVP for family and a path toward longer-term residence. Around 85% are in legal or legal-adjacent roles within six months.
