University of Toronto (Faculty of Law)
Course Overview
U of T Law is consistently ranked the top law school in Canada and is the dominant feeder into Bay Street — the seven sister Toronto firms (Blakes, Davies, Goodmans, McCarthy Tétrault, Osler, Stikeman Elliott, Torys) recruit more aggressively here than anywhere else. The first year is mandatory common-law core (constitutional, criminal, contracts, property, torts, legal process). Years 2 and 3 open to electives, clinics (the International Human Rights Program, Innocence Project, Investor Protection Clinic), and joint programs with Rotman, the School of Global Affairs, or social work.
For Sri Lankan applicants, the JD is a serious commitment — 3 years at the highest tuition tier in Canadian legal education — but the placement record is unmatched: virtually all graduates secure an articling position, and the 1L summer recruit (Bay Street firms hiring after Year 1) typically pays CAD 1,800–2,200 per week. After call to the Ontario bar, the JD-PGWP-Express Entry pathway is well-trodden.

Career Outcomes & PR
U of T JD graduates qualify for the 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — long enough to complete articling and the Ontario bar exam, then accumulate the Canadian work experience needed for Express Entry. Bay Street firms (Blakes, McCarthy Tétrault, Osler, Stikeman Elliott, Torys, Davies, Goodmans) hire heavily on campus; first-year associate salaries sit around CAD 125,000 plus signing bonus. Note: practising law in Canada requires bar admission. Foreign-trained lawyers wanting to use the JD as a credential back in Sri Lanka or for international firms also fare well — U of T Law has alumni at Norton Rose Fulbright, Clifford Chance, and the World Bank legal team.
