BEng in Software Engineering

The Specialized Honours BEng in Software Engineering is run by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science inside York University's Lassonde School of Engineering, on the Keele campus in Toronto. It is a four-year engineering degree rather than a computer-science degree with an engineering label: alongside programming and algorithms, students take engineering mathematics, professional practice, ethics and the design-process training that an accredited engineering programme requires.

The curriculum moves from programming fundamentals, data structures, discrete mathematics and computer organisation in the early years into software design and architecture, requirements engineering, databases, operating systems, networks, software quality and testing, and project management, closing with a substantial capstone design project. A co-operative education option opens after second year, which lets students alternate study terms with paid work terms at Canadian employers — for an international student that is both income and a Canadian reference on the CV before graduation.

Cost needs planning. York's published estimate for international engineering tuition in 2026-27 is approximately CAD 47,000 a year based on a standard first-year course load, with the mandatory UHIP health insurance and residence or rent on top. Over four years that is a serious commitment, and Sri Lankan families should treat the figure as York's own approximation rather than a fixed invoice — the per-course fee schedule varies with the exact load taken each term.

The reason the arithmetic still works is what sits at the end. Toronto is Canada's largest technology labour market, the co-op route builds Canadian work experience before graduation, and a four-year degree from a Canadian university carries eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years. Lassonde's engineering programmes also run on the accredited route toward Professional Engineer licensure in Ontario, which matters if a graduate intends to stay and practise rather than only to write software.
