Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching)
Maynooth University
Deadline detail: February 1 through the CAO for standard applicants; international applicants apply direct to Maynooth by around end of May
Course Overview
Maynooth University's Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) is delivered by the Froebel Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education — the continuation of the Froebel College of Education, founded in 1943 and incorporated into Maynooth in 2013. The Froebel tradition is genuinely distinctive within Irish teacher education: an emphasis on play, creativity, outdoor learning and the child's active construction of understanding, rather than on curriculum delivery alone. The four-year degree covers the full primary curriculum, inclusive and special education, Irish-medium pedagogy, and a sequence of school placements that grows from observation in year one to sustained solo teaching in year four. Graduates are eligible to apply for Teaching Council of Ireland registration under Route 1 (Primary).
There is a barrier here that we will not soften, because Sri Lankan families have lost time and money to it. Primary teaching in Ireland is a bilingual profession, and the Teaching Council requires demonstrated competence in the Irish language for primary registration. Entry to the B.Ed. requires Leaving Certificate Irish at Higher Level grade H4 or a Teaching Council-recognised equivalent. Beyond entry, portions of the programme are delivered through Irish, and there are two compulsory Gaeltacht residencies — periods of two to three weeks living and studying in an Irish-speaking region, assessed. A Sri Lankan applicant who has never studied Irish cannot enter this programme by simply passing an English test. Recognised alternative Irish qualifications exist, but obtaining one from Sri Lanka is a multi-year project, not a formality.
So who should read on? Applicants with Irish family or schooling connections who already hold Leaving Certificate Irish; and Sri Lankan students who want to understand Ireland's structure before choosing elsewhere. If primary teaching is the actual goal, New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Canada all qualify Sri Lankan students as primary teachers with no comparable language requirement — Massey University's Bachelor of Education (Primary) in New Zealand is a route we place students on regularly. If Ireland specifically is the goal, the post-primary route through a subject degree plus a Professional Master of Education carries no Irish requirement and sits against real Irish shortages in maths, science, computer science and modern languages. Talk to us first; the advice costs you nothing.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Leaving Certificate Irish (Gaeilge) at Higher Level grade H4 or a Teaching Council-recognised equivalent — a mandatory requirement for entry and for primary registration, NOT waived for international applicants, and the decisive eligibility barrier for most Sri Lankan students.
- check_circle Leaving Certificate English at O4/H7 or a recognised equivalent, and Mathematics at O4/H7 or equivalent.
- check_circle Six subjects at Leaving Certificate with a minimum of two H5 grades, or an equivalent international profile — Cambridge/Edexcel A Levels at BBC or IB Diploma at around 28 points are broadly comparable.
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L results are assessed for the general academic requirement, but they cannot substitute for the Irish-language requirement.
- check_circle Two compulsory Gaeltacht residencies (each two to three weeks in an Irish-speaking region) form an assessed part of the programme, and elements of the degree are delivered through Irish.
- check_circle Garda vetting plus a Sri Lanka Police clearance certificate before school placement.
- check_circle Applicants without Leaving Certificate Irish should discuss alternatives with us — the post-primary route (subject degree plus a Professional Master of Education) carries no Irish requirement, and New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Canada qualify primary teachers without one.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each component).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced, PTE Academic 61, or Duolingo English Test 120 also accepted.
- check_circle Waived if your secondary schooling was taught and examined entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from Cambridge, Edexcel, IB or English-medium national-curriculum streams qualify.
- check_circle The English requirement is entirely separate from the Irish-language (Gaeilge) requirement; satisfying one does nothing for the other.

Career Outcomes & PR
B.Ed. graduates who complete Teaching Council registration enter Irish primary schools on the primary teachers' pay scale, starting around €41,000 with incremental progression, a public-service pension and strong job security — the Department of Education has been actively recruiting to address primary teacher supply. Honours bachelor's graduates qualify for Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme, giving one year on a Stamp 1G permission to seek work. For Sri Lankan students the practical honest summary is this: the Gaeilge requirement, not the visa or the fees, decides whether this route is open to you. Where it is not, the same career ambition is well served by primary teaching qualifications in New Zealand and Australia, or by Colombo's international-school sector, where a Froebel-tradition qualification would be recognised at Gateway College, Elizabeth Moir School, Colombo International School and the Overseas School of Colombo.
