Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) — Mechanical
University of Canterbury
Course Overview
Canterbury's BE(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering is delivered by New Zealand's largest engineering school (UC's College of Engineering) and is accredited by Engineering New Zealand under the Washington Accord — meaning the qualification is automatically recognised in the UK, Australia, Canada, the US, and across the IESL Chartered Engineer pathway in Sri Lanka. The 4-year Honours degree includes a full first year of common engineering science (taken jointly with all other engineering disciplines) before specialising in mechanical engineering from Year 2 — covering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, dynamics, vibration analysis, CAD/CAM, mechatronics, and control systems. The final-year capstone is a substantial industry-sponsored project.
Sri Lankan applicants choose Canterbury because Christchurch is rebuilding (post-2011 earthquake) into NZ's engineering, aerospace, and clean-tech capital — Rocket Lab, Dawn Aerospace, Tait Communications, and the Riley Consultants engineering precinct all hire heavily from UC. NZ's Post-Study Work Visa offers up to 3 years on a 4-year degree, NZ Engineering chartered status (CPEng) is portable to the UK (CEng) and Sri Lanka (IESL), and tuition at NZD 49,000/year is roughly half what equivalent Australian programmes cost.
