Bachelor of Education (Teaching) — Primary
University of Auckland
Course Overview
Auckland's Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary is the New Zealand Teaching Council-accredited initial teacher education degree at the country's #1 university (QS 2025: top 70 globally, #1 in NZ). The three-year programme leads directly to provisional registration as a Primary Teacher with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand — qualifying graduates to teach Years 1-8 in NZ state and integrated schools.
Primary teaching is on New Zealand's Green List Tier 2 (Work-to-Residence pathway) — meaning Sri Lankan graduates have a structured path to permanent residency: graduate → register with NZTC → secure a qualifying teaching role → 2 years on Work-to-Residence visa → apply for PR. The Auckland Faculty of Education is the largest in New Zealand and runs the strongest Pacific and South Asian teacher-preparation pipelines.
The degree embeds 100+ days of supervised classroom placement (Auckland metro schools and decile-1 South Auckland schools mandatory), plus literacy, numeracy, te reo Māori (basic), and inclusive education foundations. Final-year graduates sit the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults assessment before NZTC registration.
