The MOE Tuition Grant slashes NUS, NTU and SMU tuition by ~75% — in exchange for a 3-year work bond.
For most Sri Lankan students this transforms three globally top-30 universities into one of the best graduate-recruiting destinations on the planet. Singaporean graduate salaries comfortably cover the bond and produce a positive return inside 3 years.

Where your money actually goes
Forget the headline number for a moment. Studying in Singapore has four cost buckets — and three of them are negotiable.
University
Tuition
Negotiable via scholarship choice, university choice and level of study. The biggest single number on the page.
Your control
Living costs
Rent, food, transport. Choosing a smaller city can save the equivalent of a year's tuition over a 3-year degree.
Fixed
One-time pre-departure
Visa, tests, flights, initial deposits. Same for everyone — plan with buffer; don't be surprised.
Government / required
Health & admin
Health insurance, residency cards, mandatory deposits. Not negotiable — but the cheapest provider can save a lot.
What you pay the university
Ranges below cover every Singapore institution Lanka Scholar partners with. The lower end is regional / public universities; the upper end is elite institutions. Your tuition is set by where you apply — and how aggressively you target scholarships.
| Study Level | LKR (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's at NUS / NTU / SMU (with MOE Grant) | LKR 4.5M – 7M |
| Bachelor's without MOE Grant | LKR 7M – 13M |
| Master's at NUS / NTU (per year) | LKR 6M – 14.5M |
| MBA (full program) | LKR 15.5M – 22M |
Your single biggest variable
City choice is the lever Sri Lankan families most often underuse. Over a 3-year degree, choosing a smaller city instead of the capital can save the equivalent of a full year's tuition — for the same Singapore qualification.

Four ways to bring the number down
The headline figure is the starting line, not the finish line. Every Sri Lankan student who lands in Singapore has pulled at least two of these levers.
Take the MOE Tuition Grant
Unless you have a specific reason not to work in Singapore after graduation, the MOE Grant + bond is essentially free money — you'd very likely choose to work in Singapore anyway given the salaries.
savings Saves LKR 1.5M+ / yearUniversity dorms are the cheapest option
NUS / NTU / SMU dorms cost SGD 600–900/month — half of any private alternative. Apply early; the best dorms fill up quickly.

A satisfying meal at any Singapore hawker centre costs SGD 4–7 — eating out is genuinely cheaper than cooking for one. Budget SGD 500/month for food without much effort.

Singapore companies pay interns SGD 1,500–3,500/month — well above the global norm. Plan your study schedule around 2–3 internship terms to fund subsequent semesters.

How we keep these numbers honest
Four things you should know before you trust this page.
Exchange rate stated
All LKR figures use the rate noted in the hero. Live rates fluctuate; we update this page quarterly. Last verified: 2026-05-14.
Universities pay us — never you
Lanka Scholar earns a commission from universities when you enrol. You pay tuition and fees directly to the institutions. There is no service fee, registration fee, or agent fee from us.
Ranges, not promises
Tuition and living costs vary by university and city. We've given the realistic middle 80% — not the cheapest possible or most expensive.

How scholarships change this math
ASEAN Scholarships (fully funded by MOE Singapore) offer Sri Lankan A/L students full tuition + flights + stipend at top junior colleges leading to NUS / NTU. The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) funds PhD students at NUS, NTU, SMU and A*STAR research institutes. University-specific bursaries supplement the MOE Tuition Grant for need-based applicants.

Is the 3-year bond legally binding? expand_more
Yes. You sign a deed before tuition is reduced. If you breach the bond (e.g. leave Singapore before 3 years), you repay the full tuition difference plus 10% per annum interest. In practice, almost all bonded graduates work the 3 years — Singapore salaries make staying the obvious choice. -
Can the 3 years be at any company? expand_more
Yes — any Singapore-registered employer counts (including foreign multinationals' Singapore offices). You can switch jobs during the bond as long as you remain in Singapore-registered employment. -
What if I want to do a master's straight after my bachelor's? expand_more
Permitted — postgraduate study at a Singapore institution counts toward bond service in many cases. We help you structure the timing. -
Does my family need to relocate too? expand_more
No. You can live in NUS / NTU / SMU dorms or shared HDBs as a single student. Many bonded graduates marry and settle in Singapore — but it's not required. -
Is the MOE Grant available for postgraduate study? expand_more
It's been gradually withdrawn for most postgraduate programs. Some research master's at NUS / NTU still offer it; coursework master's typically do not. Always confirm at the application stage.
