The GIC isn't a cost, it's a deposit · Verified 2026-05-14

Canada's CAD 20,635 GIC looks scary on paper — until you realise it comes back to you, in monthly installments, over your first year.

Combined with tuition 30–40% cheaper than equivalent US programs and a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit, Canada is one of the strongest long-term economic plays. The SDS fast-track closed in November 2024 — applications now go through the standard process, which doesn't change the costs.

Where your money actually goes

Forget the headline number for a moment. Studying in Canada has four cost buckets — and three of them are negotiable.

University

Tuition

Negotiable via scholarship choice, university choice and level of study. The biggest single number on the page.

Living costs

Rent, food, transport. Choosing a smaller city can save the equivalent of a year's tuition over a 3-year degree.

What you pay the university

Ranges below cover every Canada institution Lanka Scholar partners with. The lower end is regional / public universities; the upper end is elite institutions. Your tuition is set by where you apply — and how aggressively you target scholarships.

Study Level LKR (approx.)
Bachelor's (per year) LKR 5M – 12.5M
Master's (per year) LKR 4M – 11.5M
PhD (per year) LKR 1.8M – 5.7M
College Diploma (per year) LKR 3.2M – 5M

Your single biggest variable

City choice is the lever Sri Lankan families most often underuse. Over a 3-year degree, choosing a smaller city instead of the capital can save the equivalent of a full year's tuition — for the same Canada qualification.

Four ways to bring the number down

The headline figure is the starting line, not the finish line. Every Sri Lankan student who lands in Canada has pulled at least two of these levers.

Choose smaller cities

Halifax (Dalhousie), Winnipeg (UManitoba), Saskatoon (USask), and Sudbury (Laurentian) all offer DLI programs at half the living cost of Toronto. Same PGWP rights, same Express Entry pathway.

The GIC isn't a cost — it's a deposit

You get CAD 20,635 back over your first 12 months as monthly living-cost transfers. Plan your cash flow around this — the upfront amount is a temporary squeeze, not a lost cost.

Co-op programs pay for themselves

Many Canadian universities (Waterloo, Concordia, Toronto Met) run paid co-op terms — students typically earn CAD 18–25/hr during 4-month work placements built into the degree.

Quebec for cheaper tuition

McGill and UdeM charge Quebec-resident rates (~CAD 8,000/year) to international students from countries with bilateral agreements — Sri Lanka qualifies for some programs.

How scholarships change this math

Canada's federal Vanier (PhD) and Trudeau (postgrad research) scholarships are highly competitive. At the institutional level, most universities offer entrance scholarships of CAD 5,000–15,000 to high-achieving Sri Lankan students. Quebec institutions have the largest fee differentials — non-Quebec residents pay roughly double provincial rates.
