Finland looks expensive at first glance — non-EU students pay tuition, and the sticker price scares many Sri Lankan families off. But that headline number hides the real story: Finnish universities hand out generous tuition scholarships, often half or all of the fee, and a graduate can stay up to two years to find work. Look past the brochure figure and Finland becomes one of the smarter bets in Europe.

info

Tuition, scholarships, the funds requirement, and permit rules change every year. The figures below are illustrative — always confirm the current numbers with Migri (Finnish Immigration Service) and your university, or with our counsellors, before you commit money or sign anything.

Why Finland

Finland punches well above its size in the fields Sri Lankan students gravitate toward — technology, engineering, and design — and teaches a large share of its programmes in English.

  • check_circle Globally respected universities — Aalto, the University of Helsinki, Tampere, the University of Turku, LUT and others, strong in tech, engineering, data, and design
  • check_circle A genuine English-taught ecosystem — hundreds of bachelor's and master's degrees run fully in English, so you don't need Finnish to study
  • check_circle A serious jobs market in software, electronics, gaming, clean energy and health-tech — Nokia, gaming studios, and a deep start-up scene sit here
  • check_circle A post-study residence permit to look for work, granted for up to two years after you graduate
  • check_circle A safe, orderly, English-fluent society that consistently ranks at the top of global quality-of-life and education tables

Finnish higher education splits into universities (research-led, academic) and universities of applied sciences (UAS) — the practical, industry-linked route. Both are respected; a UAS often suits students who want an employment-focused degree with built-in work placements.

The money: tuition, scholarships, and proof of funds

Three numbers matter, and the middle one is the one most families miss.

  • check_circle Tuition (non-EU institutional rate): roughly €8,000–€18,000 per year — around LKR 2.7–6.1 million — depending on the university and programme. Master's and high-demand fields sit at the higher end. Check the exact figure on your offer.
  • check_circle Scholarships: Finnish universities are required to run scholarship schemes, and they are generous — commonly a 50% or 100% tuition-fee waiver. The University of Helsinki, for example, offers both, though most awards are the 50% waiver. This is what changes your real cost.
  • check_circle Living costs you must prove to Migri: at least €800 per month, which works out to €9,600 for a year of studies — roughly LKR 3.3 million — held in your own bank account, on top of any unpaid tuition.

So the figure to budget against is rarely the full tuition. A 50% waiver halves it; a 100% waiver removes it entirely, leaving you mainly responsible for living costs — which is why Finland can end up cheaper than destinations with no fees but higher rent.

Pro Counsellor Tip

"

The scholarship usually isn’t a separate application you can forget about — for most Finnish universities you’re automatically considered (or you tick a box) when you apply for admission, and the strongest applicants get the waiver. That means your academic profile does double duty: it wins your place and your funding in one go. Apply early and apply well — a rushed application costs you both.

"

The residence permit and proof of funds

As a Sri Lankan national you apply for a student residence permit through Migri, normally via the Enter Finland online service, then attend a biometrics appointment at the Finnish mission handling Sri Lanka. The two things that decide most applications are an unconditional offer and clean proof of funds.

  • check_circle Show at least €800 per month — €9,600 for a one-year-or-longer programme — in your own account, evidenced by bank statements covering the recent months
  • check_circle If you haven't fully paid tuition, show you can cover that too — a scholarship award letter genuinely helps here, because it lowers the amount you must prove
  • check_circle Keep the money in your name; sponsor funds and last-minute lump-sum deposits are exactly what raises questions

Working while you study

A Finnish student residence permit comes with work rights — you can work alongside your studies within the limits set on your permit (an average weekly cap during term, with more freedom in holiday periods). Treat any earnings as a top-up to a properly-funded budget, never as the thing that makes your Migri numbers add up. Tampere, Turku and smaller cities stretch a Sri Lankan budget much further than central Helsinki.

After you graduate: the residence permit to look for work

This is Finland’s stay-back route, and it’s a strong one. After completing your degree you can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business, granted for up to two years.

  • check_circle You can apply right after graduating, and as late as within five years of completing your degree — so even if you leave Finland first, the door stays open
  • check_circle You're allowed to work during this permit while you job-hunt
  • check_circle Once you land a role, you switch to a work-based residence permit and continue building your career in Finland

That two-year runway — longer than several rival countries offer — is what turns a Finnish degree into an actual career path, not just a qualification.

The bottom line

Finland suits the Sri Lankan student who’s strong on paper and put off by headline fees elsewhere. The tuition looks high until the scholarship lands, the Migri funds requirement is moderate by European standards, and the two-year post-study permit gives you real time to find work. Apply early, treat the scholarship as part of the application from day one, and pick your city with rent in mind.
