Every US student visa runs through one online form: the DS-160. It looks long and intimidating, and a careless slip — a wrong date, a mismatched name, a forgotten social-media handle — can mean delays or awkward questions at your interview. Here’s how to complete it cleanly the first time.

info

The DS-160 and US visa procedures change. This is a general walkthrough, not official advice — always follow the current instructions on the U.S. Department of State website and the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, and answer every question truthfully.

What the DS-160 is

The DS-160 is the U.S. Department of State’s online nonimmigrant visa application. You complete and submit it before booking and attending your F-1 interview at the U.S. Embassy in Colombo. When you submit it, you get a confirmation page with a barcode — that page is one of your essential interview documents.

Have these ready before you start

Gather everything first; the form times out and is hard to do piecemeal:

  • check_circle Your passport (and any old passports / travel history)
  • check_circle Your Form I-20 from your US university (you'll enter SEVIS and school details from it)
  • check_circle A compliant digital photo meeting the US visa photo specifications
  • check_circle Your travel, education, and employment history with dates
  • check_circle Family details and your US point of contact (often the university)
  • check_circle Your social-media usernames for the past five years (a required disclosure)

Pro Counsellor Tip

"

Make your DS-160 match your other documents exactly. Your name must mirror your passport, and your school details must match your I-20. The most common avoidable problem is a mismatch — a name spelled differently, or a SEVIS/school detail that doesn’t line up — which raises questions the moment the officer cross-checks. Consistency is everything.

"

The sections that trip people up

  • check_circle The photo — must meet exact US specifications (size, background, recency); a rejected photo stalls the form
  • check_circle Social media — you must list the platforms and usernames you've used in the past five years; don't leave it blank or omit accounts (see our separate guide on US social-media vetting)
  • check_circle Travel history — list previous trips honestly, including any prior US visas or refusals
  • check_circle Security/eligibility questions — answer truthfully; a 'yes' is not automatically disqualifying, but a discovered lie is fatal
  • check_circle Purpose of trip and US contact — select the student category and enter your university as the point of contact

After you submit

Print the DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode — you cannot attend the interview without it. Then pay the visa (MRV) fee, pay the SEVIS fee, and book your interview slot at the U.S. Embassy. On interview day, bring the DS-160 confirmation, your passport, I-20, SEVIS receipt, MRV receipt, photo, and your financial and academic documents.

A few practical cautions

Save your application ID the moment you start — you’ll need it to retrieve an incomplete form. Complete it on a stable connection, and don’t rush the review step; re-read every field before you submit, because corrections after submission mean redoing sections. Take your time once, rather than fixing mistakes twice.

The bottom line

The DS-160 isn’t difficult — it’s detailed. Gather your passport, I-20, photo, history, and social-media handles first; keep every entry consistent with your documents; answer honestly; and print the barcoded confirmation for your interview. Done carefully, it’s a smooth gateway to your F-1 appointment.

Next steps

If you’ve got your I-20 and are starting your DS-160, bring them to us. We’ll check your entries, get the photo and social-media sections right, and prepare you for the interview at the Colombo embassy. Our USA student visa guide sets out the full F-1 sequence the DS-160 sits inside.
