University of Lapland International Scholarship

The University of Lapland, in Rovaniemi at the edge of the Arctic Circle, is Finland's northernmost university and a distinctive specialist in art and design, law, education, and social sciences — with internationally recognised Arctic and tourism research. For non-EU/EEA students admitted to its English-taught Master's programmes, the university offers tuition-fee scholarships covering full or partial tuition, decided on academic merit at admission. Programmes such as Arctic Art and Design, Tourism, Marketing, and International Relations are well suited to students drawn to creative, environmental, or Arctic-focused study. For Sri Lankan students, a strong upper-second or first-class Bachelor's in a relevant field — supported by a portfolio for the art and design routes — is the realistic baseline. The waiver tiers and number of awards are set each year, so confirm the current terms for your programme.

Academic Merit

Selection is merit-based from your Master's application. A strong upper-second or first-class Bachelor's from a recognised Sri Lankan university in a relevant field is the competitive baseline; art and design programmes also assess a portfolio.

Admission to an Eligible Master's

You must be admitted to a Lapland English-taught Master's participating in the scheme. The waiver attaches to admission — normally there is no separate scholarship application.

translate

English Proficiency

Typically IELTS Academic 6.5 (no section below 5.5) or TOEFL iBT 92. Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degree programmes may qualify via an MOI/exemption route — check Lapland's language page for your programme.

account_tree Application Process

1

Apply to the Master's via Studyinfo / Lapland

Submit your Master's application in the national application round Lapland uses, with transcripts, degree certificate, CV, motivation letter, English evidence, and a portfolio for art/design programmes. The non-EU round usually closes in January.

2

Automatic scholarship assessment

For most programmes the tuition scholarship is assessed automatically from the same application. Check your programme page in case a tick-box or extra statement is required.

3

Admission + scholarship decision

Admission results are released in spring; the scholarship outcome (full/partial) is communicated with or shortly after the offer.

4

Accept and apply for the residence permit

Accept your place, then apply for the Finnish student residence permit via Migri, showing your offer, scholarship letter, and the funds required for costs not covered by the waiver.

Why University of Lapland?

The University of Lapland is Finland's Arctic university, distinctive for art and design, law, tourism, and education, and a global hub for Arctic and sustainability research. Rovaniemi offers a uniquely Nordic student experience — northern lights, low living costs versus Helsinki, and the same Finnish post-study job-search permit.
