University of Turku International Scholarship
The University of Turku is one of Finland's largest multidisciplinary research universities, set in the historic coastal city of Turku. For non-EU/EEA students admitted to its English-taught Master's programmes, the university offers tuition-fee scholarships covering either 100% or 50% of tuition, and several programmes pair the full waiver with a living-cost grant for the first year. The award is decided on academic merit as part of admission — most programmes assess it automatically from your Master's application. For Sri Lankan applicants, Turku is competitive but more accessible than Aalto or Helsinki: a first-class or strong upper-second Bachelor's from a recognised Sri Lankan university in a relevant field is a solid base. The exact waiver tiers, grant amounts, and which programmes include a living grant are set by Turku each year, so confirm the current terms for your specific programme.

fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Non-EU/EEA Citizen
The scholarship is for citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA who are liable for tuition fees. Sri Lankan citizens are eligible. EU/EEA students study tuition-free and do not use this scheme.
Academic Merit
Selection is merit-based from your Master's application. A first-class or strong upper-second Bachelor's from a recognised Sri Lankan university in a relevant discipline, with good grades in core subjects, is the competitive baseline.
Admission to an Eligible Master's
You must be admitted to a Turku English-taught Master's programme participating in the scholarship scheme. The waiver attaches to your admission — there is normally no separate application.
English Proficiency
Typically IELTS Academic 6.5 (no section below 5.5) or TOEFL iBT 92. Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degree programmes may qualify via an MOI/exemption route — check Turku's language-requirement page for your programme.
account_tree Application Process
Apply to the Master's via Studyinfo / Turku
Submit your Master's application in the national application round Turku uses, with transcripts, degree certificate, CV, motivation letter, and English evidence. The non-EU round usually closes in January.
Automatic scholarship assessment
For most programmes the tuition scholarship is assessed automatically from the same application. Check your programme page in case a tick-box or extra statement is required.
Admission + scholarship decision
Admission results are released in spring; the scholarship outcome (100%/50% and any living grant) is communicated with or shortly after the offer.
Accept and apply for the residence permit
Accept your place, then apply for the Finnish student residence permit via Migri, showing your offer, scholarship letter, and the funds required for costs not covered by the waiver.
Why University of Turku?
Turku is a large multidisciplinary research university in Finland's oldest city, strong across medicine, biosciences, technology, and the humanities. It offers a more affordable student city than Helsinki while keeping the Finnish standard of high-quality, English-taught Master's education.
