Malta Master it! Scholarship Scheme

The Malta Master it! Scholarship Scheme is a Government of Malta programme supporting Master's-level study (in Malta or abroad), with awards up to roughly €18,000 (around LKR 6.2 million) for higher-cost subjects. We list it for transparency, but you should know upfront: this is a RESIDENCY-LINKED scheme. Eligibility centres on applicants who are residents of Malta — typically Maltese / EU nationals or third-country nationals already legally settled and often working in Malta. It is generally NOT a route for a Sri Lankan student applying fresh from Sri Lanka who has no existing Maltese residence or employment basis. If you are already living and working in Malta (for example on a work permit) and meet the residence conditions, it can be valuable. If you are applying from Sri Lanka, a University of Malta or private-university merit award is the realistic path — and we'll point you there instead of letting you waste an application here.

Residency Requirement (Read This First)

The scheme is built around Maltese residence. Applicants generally must be residents of Malta — Maltese / EU citizens, or third-country nationals already legally settled (and often employed) in Malta. A Sri Lankan applying from Sri Lanka with no Maltese residence basis is normally NOT eligible. Be honest with yourself about this before applying.

Master's-Level Study

Where eligible, the scheme funds Master's-level (MQF Level 7) study, in Malta or in some cases abroad, with the award scaled by subject cost and priority area.

Who It Actually Suits

It suits a Sri Lankan already living and working in Malta on a valid residence/work permit who now wants to do a part-time or full-time Master's. If that's you, it can be a strong source of funding — talk to us and we'll help you check the current residence conditions.

Better Routes for Fresh Applicants

If you're applying from Sri Lanka, don't pin hopes on this scheme. University of Malta merit reductions, American University of Malta awards, and broader EU university scholarships are the realistic paths — we'll steer you to awards you can genuinely win.

1

First, confirm residency eligibility

Before anything else, verify whether you meet the Maltese residence conditions for the current year's call. If you do not, we'll redirect you to scholarships you can actually win rather than submitting a doomed application.

2

Secure a Master's place

If eligible, obtain admission to a recognised Master's programme (in Malta or, where the scheme allows, abroad).

3

Apply to the scheme during the annual call

Submit the Master it! application during the government's open call, with proof of residence, admission, and the required documentation. Funding is competitive and priority-area weighted.

4

Award and disbursement

Successful residents receive the award per the scheme rules, disbursed against study costs. Conditions on completion and reporting apply.

About the Scheme

Master it! is part of Malta's national investment in postgraduate skills, funded by the Government of Malta. It is genuinely valuable — but for residents of Malta. We include it for completeness and honesty: most Sri Lankan students applying from home will not qualify, and we'd rather tell you that than have you waste an application.
